Dick's Remmy .223

Just picked up a Remington 700 Varmint ADL from Dick's. $449.00 including rebate. I believe that it has a 1 in 12 barrel. But does anyone know for sure? Also, I'm gonna have the barrel cut and recrowned at 20 inches to save on weigth and portability. I know that it will loose some velocity but will a 50-53 grain bullet still work ok from that barrel after I have it cut? Thanks.

Sorry it's a .223. Thanks.

Thanks for the responses. The barrel is 26 inch and is a rather unwieldy pig. I would approximately loose 120fps with my planned load from a 20 inch tube based on performance of a 24 inch tube. I would also assume a grain range from 40-62 with the 1-12? Right?

I'm no expert on 223's but from what I learned from the two I've owned, you might even go as high as 69gr with a 12 twist.

FWIW,,,, I don't blame you one bit for wanting to shorten that barrel, but I'd go 22". You can always cut more off but ya can't grow it back and trust me, velocity per inch of barrel is far from a perfect science. BTDT

I've found 22" to be the perfect compromise with my walking varminters.
Luck

25gr Benchmark with a 55gr VMAX will yield some super tight groups with that setup. Avg velocity will be around 3215 fps.

I have the same rifle that I bought last year, I added new glass and a boyds varmint thumbhole stock. I need trigger work or a new trigger, but mine seems to like Ultramax 50gr V-Max and Black Hills 52gr Match HPs and I do not reload.

Mike...

Congrats on the new rifle! I bought the same rifle last night in 308. Took it home, pulled the rings, scope and bases off and put Leupold rings and bases with a Busnell Elite 3200 10x40 on it. Can't wait to shoot it!

I bought the 700 SPS-V in .223 (w/ floor plate) a couple years back for the same price. 1 in 12" twist.

With the 26" bbl (and I had the factory stock bedded), I've had superb luck with the Hornady Superformance ammo. Additionally I can usually get just under .5 MOA with 22.8 grains of X-Term and Sierra 55grain HPBT (#1390).

Mine came with the X-Mark Pro trigger. I've set it at 3#'s and it's never let me down.
