Difference between a Raven and a crow?

No. The American Crow does not get that big. But there can be the ones that occasionally do. The crow and raven are two different species. The raven has a larger bill and some feathers that come out on the bill at the base. It has a deeper, more "froglike" croak than the crows "caw". Also a raven is more like to soar in the air like a red tailed hawk than a crow. A raven also has a wedge shaped tail. narrower at the base and widening out near the tips.

Raven's I've heard are supposed to be the smartest bird in the world but I think they need to work on teamwork. If I see a crow in a field and attempt to get a shot off, more than likely another crow will see me, start making a racket and then every crow is airborn.

I've shot two ravens at just under 300 yds in the last week.I think it is easier to shoot ravens with a rifle than crows because they don't seem to have any other ravens watching around. I've shot four ravens this year and all four were by mistake. We are allowed to shoot them here but I feel crows give them enough problems so I don't intentionally shoot them.

Raven's are a huge interesting bird. They seem to walk with their legs attached to their shoulders something like a larger bird of prey. They have a giant beek in comparison to a crow and soft hair on their head and neck. I like them alot and curse and swear when I get down the field and find that I've shot another. I guess I just have to smarten up and get a little more patient before I pull the trigger. I hate crows!! Ryan

We are allowed to hunt crows in NY but I think the weekends are closed to hunting them. No ravens that I know of here.

Is it the "crow" that is Mexico's national bird??? I think that is why crows get the weekend off from being shot. ANYONE KNOW ?!?!

I've found a big difference in the behavior of the ones you encounter on the highways lately. It used to be you'd get within about 30 yards of them, and they would fly off. Now I notice they just sit by the roadside and give you dirty looks as you whiz by. They seem to becomings domesticated in that respect. Best wishes.

The ravens out here are pretty smart. You can drive right by one sittin on a fence post and he won't budge but if you stop the truck within 300 yards of one he'll be in the air as soon as the wheels stop turning.

In wisconsin the differance is jail time for a raven and no jail time for a crow /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Back in the 60's I watched a couple of deer crossing a small lake in the U.P. one of the deer fell through and was fighting like hell to get back up on the ice. It didn't take long to attract the Ravens. They attacked that deer with a furor until he was to worn out and started to eat. They are a very, very smart bird. Some Ravens may not be up to snuff on being shot at the way the old crow is. The crow migrates in the winter and is harrassed alot more than the Raven who doesn't migrate and most places is not allowed to be hunted.

Jeff's post alludes to an unofficial policy of some AzG&F. Crows are legal game during season, ravens are protected at all times. When asked how to tell them apart, the answer was, "Ravens are alive in the air. Crows are dead on the ground."

Danurve you have a way with words. "I hate them and they must die." Seven simple words which get right to the point!! And mostly with which I must agree!! Although perhaps more so with crows than ravens.

If you hit it, it's a crow. If you miss it, it's a raven. Works for me.

Billy Bob,
Be carefull, I believe we can hunt Crows in NY only on Friday - Monday and only from September to March. Pretty stupid if you ask me!

You gotta love this guys...
In West Virginia, there is a crow season that just went into effect last year. I have no idea what the dates for this season are, but I do know that the by-law says you may shoot nuisance crows year-round.
So when is a crow NOT a nuisance????

Guess I can never get busted shooting crows out of season!!!!
