Differences in rifle primers

99% of my relaoading has been a handful of receipes for 3 calibers - I have always used Winchester primers.

My question to reloaders is this:

Would there be any "real" difference in pressures of loads if I used CCI or Winchester primers?

Thanks.

I am no expert and I am not a 1000 yard bench shooter. That being said I can see no differance what so ever in my loads from one to the other

I shoot a bunch of different calibers, both magnum and non-magnum and quite a few years ago just got tired of stocking so many different primers. large rifle magnum, large rifle standard, small rifle magnum, small rifle standard, large pistol magnum, small pistol standard, wow lots of different primers.

Now I shoot CCI primers and only stock Large rifle mag and small BR-4 primers for the rifles and Large and small pistol mag for the handguns. I've worked up all my loads for these primers and haven't had any problems and I can buy by the thousand for a savings.

Accuracy is great and it's a no fuss situation when I go for a box of primers.

From 45 years of reloading this seems to work well for me.

I pick a primer, run the ladder, find THE load,..then test that load with different primers. Sometimes the difference (good or bad) is quite a lot, other times, not so much.

This is something that came out of shop a wile back, not sure if it helps:

I realize this is just one data point but it may help. A couple years ago, I was trying to justify the added cost of the match primers. The test was simply to take the most accurate rifle in my cabinet and load parallel loads with the only difference being the primers. Here were the results:
.270 Imp., 48.5grs. Varget, Norma fire-formed .30-06 brass, Sierra 135gr MK 3.490" to ogive, 10-shot groups, 300yds.
CCI LR: 3015fps, +/- 45fps, 3.15inch
CCI BR2: 3018fps +/- 46fps, 2.90inch
Winchester LR: 3030fps, +/- 33fps, 2.91inch
Remington LR: 3055fps, +/- 21fps, 2.52inch
Federal 210: 3040fps, +/- 22fps, 2.52inch
Federal 210M: 3038fps, +/- 18fps, 2.50inch
I would not read too much into the group size since it was a pretty windy day but at least in this one instance the match primer did have a lower SD.

+1 JUSTC!

In certain powders, I have found that there is a specific preference and no telliing what that preference might be.

Chasing your tail like this can drive you crazy when you have the time to do all the load testing.
