between 223 and 5.56 and 308 ? /or 30-06 and 7.62. I kinda know the difference's. But some rifle's will shoot one but not the other or some rifle's shoot both . Which one does both ?

.308 and .30-06 r both 7.62 or .308 cal. w/ different cases,.223 and 5.56 r basicaly the same just operate at different pressures.

My bad with throwing 308 and 30-06 together . what i meant if a rile is chambered for a certain round then that is what it is. But if I buy a 223 can i shoot 5.56 ammo or if I buy a 30-06 can I shoot 7.62 ? Looking to see if I can shoot military ammo.

.308 shouldn't be used in rifles chambered for 7.62. 7.62 can be used in rifles chambered for .308. If this is a little confusing it is probably best just to use the ammo that is designated on the barrel of your weapon.

Been a lot of years since I've fired a 223 and have never fired one with mil surplus ammo. I don't understand why it can't be done? The only difference should be the case capacity with the military having a bit less. Whats the deal here, I've read this befor and don't get it.

I have never heard of any issues of any kind ever with someone shooting 5.56 NATO in any gun chambered for .223 Remington.

The CYA people might say otherwise, but go ahead and shoot it is what I say. I have for years. Never me or anyone else I have ever known or heard of has ever had an issue of any kind.

7.62x51 NATO is essentially the same as the 308, much like the 223 and 5.56. There are some minor differences, I haven't seen any real warnings about pressures for the 308/7.62 like you see in the 223/5.56 references.

7.62 is a .30 cal bullet. You can't just shoot any old 7.62. There is 7.62x39 7.62x51 and others. Make sure you know what you have before you shoot any 7.62. Key

I've both read and heard the do's and dont's of using 5.56 in a .223. My feelings are that 5.56's are used primarily in semi auto or automatic military weapons. If I had a Ruger mini 14, I might not shoot the mil surp rounds. Seeing is how a bolt action is much stronger, I don't see the problem with using in a bolt action or single shot rifle. That's just my semi-uneducated opinion. Are there any barrel makers, custom gun makers, or trained gunsmiths on here that would care to elaborate on my thoughts?

I've never read of any problems using mil surp 30-06 rounds in a bolt action rifle, are there problems with that? I have never shot any in my Ruger ought6, but doubt I would hesitate to do so, so long as it chambered properly.
