Dillon 550 vs 650

The 650 has automatic indexing, the 550 you have to move from one station to the next manually by way of a star wheel

The 550 has a four station tool head (4 dies etc. ) the 650 has a 5 station.

The 650 is capable of having a powder check system added, the 550 is not.

If it's worth it is up to you and would depend on your loading needs.

I like my 550 because if something odd should happen during one of the handle strokes, it's relatively easy to stop and fix whatever the issue is because it doesn't automatically turn. But that's just me.

Your needs should dictate the press you need. I started with a 550B about 11 years ago. I didn't mind that the press did not auto index at all. Thinking back I believe that press produced 300 to 400 rounds an hour.

The only reason I sold the 550 and moved on to the 650 was I didn't like the fact that it only had 4 stations meaning I couldn't use a powder check die.

One thing that I tell everyone buying a progressive press is get a powder check die, it's cheap insurance.

In all honesty the 650 is not much faster than the 550. Mine certainly has not produced the advertised rounds per hour.
