Dixie Chicks Bash Patriotism!

There must be something about being overseas that really gets the Dixie Chicks talking. Group members Emily Robison and Natalie Maines have now taken on the subject of patriotism, and apparently they're as big of fans of it as they are President Bush.

In an interview with UK's Telegraph newspaper, Robison accused some country artists of jumping on the anti-Chicks bandwagon to further their own careers. She said, "A lot of artists cashed in on being against what we said or what we stood for because that was promoting their career, which was a horrible thing to do. A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism."

Maines continued, "The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country... I don't see why people care about patriotism."

She doesn't get it. Never has, prolly never will.

The best thing about free speech is that it makes it easy to spot the idiots.

As far as I am concerned they can stay in Europe. Over the past few months they have bashed the people that have made them famous. If not for those dumb patriotic people like me nobody in Europe would even now who these women were. I liked the music they use to make but I have decided not to support any actor or singer that bashes the things that I believe in. They have the right to say and do the things that they do and I have the right to not buy their product.

What did you expect from a bunch of bimbos with their phoney boob jobs, botox lips that make them look like Donald Duck. It is part of the Hollywood debauchery that distracts from the real world of illegal immigration, the war on terror, gasoline cost and the fact that you and I bust our a$$es to make a living. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

jspike1 you got that right. If it was not for America they would all be speaking German and not by choice. And we would be marching to Von Valmart with a goose step.

I'll admit to liking some performers that are politically very out of sync with my views. Pink Floyd and Joan Baez come to mind as prime examples.

I don't even mind it when they make liberal statements in their songs if I like the music. The lyrics in Baez's song "Raze the Prisons" (I think), promote an absolutely absurd concept on the face of it, but man does she sing it beautifully. WOW, what a voice!

I fail to understand the concept that because someone can sing/act/etc. their political or social views are somehow more valid than the experts that study and "do" the stuff for a living. Performers as geo-political experts? Give me a break.

In the case of the Dixie Chicks (and Jane Fonda) their public actions and comments outside of their "art" are so onerous that it does shade my opinion of the value of their performance. They should shut up and make their comments in their music.

Celebrities Display Indifference Toward American Sovereignty

My son argues with me almost every time I use the word "treason" to describe the actions of liberals. His response to my use of the word in a recent column was to e-mail me the following: "Treason is very much in the realm of specific acts pertaining to the national security of the nation, and I don't think being a whiny liberal qualifies as treason." Perhaps, but it comes close.

Take, for example, the senseless comments of Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks. Maines created a firestorm a couple of years ago by telling a British audience she was ashamed that President Bush is from her native Texas. This was enough to cause many of the Chicks' fans to cancel tickets, toss their CDs, and cancel plans to ever see them in concert. It also started a feud between Maines and Toby Keith, who has done his best to show solidarity in America's war on terror and to support our troops at every opportunity.

But like all ignorant liberals (redundant, I know), Natalie Maines just can't stop herself from saying stupid things. Most recently, Maines made this statement: "The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country, I don't see why people care about patriotism."

I yearn to bruise my knuckles on her forehead.

Like every gasbag with a soapbox before her, from Jane Fonda to Barbra Streisand, Natalie Maines has no clue what it took in blood, sweat and sacrifice to obtain the freedom she now so blithely takes for granted. Unfortunately for us, her celebrity gives her a mass forum with which to waste our time, and her fame lends an air of credibility to her obtuseness.

Not to be outdone, pop star Conor Oberst and his band Bright Eyes returned to their native Omaha for a free concert in Memorial Park. During the concert, the audience was inculcated with the political inanities of The World According To Conor, who believes that his celebrity makes him privy to wisdom that the rest of us just cannot access. Oberst called President Bush "an idiot." Wow. Now there is a dissertation of cogent analysis for you.

It has become standard operating procedure for celebrity elitists to bash the president and America's involvement in Iraq. But it is Natalie Maines' latest comment that should most concern us, because it reflects an attitude of indifference toward American sovereignty. Does she imagine that the prosperity that has enabled her to make millions just happened by accident? Does she fail to see that for over two centuries patriots have sacrificed their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor in order to ensure that she can live in freedom?

Why be a patriot, Ms. Maines?

Because it is quite literally the least you can do and still call yourself an American. Don't you dare wrap yourself in the protections of our Constitution while mocking those who would die to preserve them. To do so is to confirm to the world that you are a trite, meaningless voice whose legacy will rot in the trash heap of history. If you are so ashamed of our leaders and our beliefs, I would ask that you take full advantage of our lenient border policies. The door's not locked. Feel free to find out firsthand how willing they are to put up with your dual ailments of mental constipation and verbal diarrhea in Darfur. Or Pyongyang. Or Tehran. Better yet, how about Baghdad circa 1979-2003?

Patriotism is not flag-waving and mindless anthem chanting. It is realizing that we owe a debt we could not possibly pay back. And sometimes the least we can do to repay it is to simply think before we speak. You are the recipient of the blessings of liberty, Ms. Maines. Act like it.

If she had said what she said here at home, that would be one thing. Doing so on foriegn soil while we are at war is a different problem & that's what killed them.

Her latest statement isn't helping her any with Americans & she has no idea why.

The light's on but nobody's home.

That's because their brains are connected directly to their genitals. They think they are so great but they stink like dead meat. I sometimes think it would be in the best interest of this country and it's fighting men and women if we could put mafia contracts on the likes of all of them.

I think the Ditzy Twits are an amazing talent. After all, they manage to sing even with a foot in their mouths. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

This is a stupid and childish thing to do, but when they first came out and saidtha tthey don't sing country songs, they are pop singers. I made it a habbit to stop in the music store, pull their music from the country section and scatter them around in the Pop Section. Like I said, it was a stupid act of protest, but I felt better somehow for doing it.

I don't think "The Chicks" have done the boob job trip. I saw them way back when they were just trying to make a name for themselves and the two sisters were smoking hot back then. The singer REALLY needs a boob job, in point of fact.

Otta stick with the story instead of getting personal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif They haven't called me a "Lard Bottom" yet so I ain't going to call them on fact that the curtains don't match the carpet.
