DIY Coatings?

I just got my WOA varmint upper but the lower that I built is FDE. What is the best way to color the forend FDE to match? Is there a do it yourself paint or coating that will hold up and look awesome? Or is there more to it than that?

Okay, I'll get some ordered. Is it worth using their applicator on the kit or should I find someone with an air brush? If I do it will it look like it was done right if I follow the directions or will it look like I did it.....lol... Thanks for the help guys

I've used their shake and spray kit a couple of times. Lately I have just been buying the 4 oz size Duracoat and then buying the Preval sprayer. You can do it this way a little cheaper.

I bought the DIY Aerosol FDE duracoat. It looks great!! I hope that it holds up as good as it went on. Thanks for the help guys

I did a few guns in the duracoat. It applies pretty heavy so any where you have tight tolerances you may run into issues. On edges it chips pretty easily but on the flat surfaces it does hold up pretty well. It is also very easy to apply.

Also if you decide you don't like it, it isn't to bad to blast off.

I have went to cerakote and have been very happy with their products.

The Cerakote seems like a more permanent way to do it. I'll see how the Duracoat holds up, if it falls apart then I'll do the Cerakote. Thanks for the helpful advice.

Cerakote is a lot more permanent. A lot better of a finish, protection wise against rust and durability. But it isn't as easy to apply as Duracoat. If you're just wanting to change the color, I'd say go with an easy Duracoat. If you want a lifetime finish and protection, spring for the cerakote. I'm currently getting set up to apply Cerakote, and know a guy that does great work with it too. Depending on your location in Utah, I may be able to help.

I agree. I have used Gunkote many times in the spray can and liquid form with an airbrush. It's very durable and easy to apply. It works best over a parkerized steel or bead blasted stainless steel surface.

Cerekote is the best and most durable IMO. But the most important thing is to prep and clean whatever it is you are painting.
