I decided to take one of the 30rnd millitary surplus mags and make it into a 5rnd. I think its going to work great. With just a sawsall J-B weld. I'll post some pics and instructions if anyone has any intrest in trying this themself. Im not sure if its going to work 100% I still need to take it to the range and make sure it feeds well and everything as of now it seems like its going to work great.

all you needed to do was cut a piece of wood small enough to fit inside of the spring and long enough to push on the follower to fit 5 rounds only. 10 minute job and does not ruin the mag.

I wish someone would figure out how to make a 5 rnd mag into a 30 rnd mag....

Ok I did it not too much trouble and it seems too work fine. All I did was cut the mag down to "3.5, then cut the spring down to about the length of the full mag. Then cut a rod to about "2.5 and use jb weld to attach the rod to the bottom plate after it sets put the spring in duct tape the bottom on and jb weld the bottom on. theres a few other little things you have to do like sand the burrs out of the bottom after you cut it, and bend the little tab on the bottom plate so it fits flush but other than that it was pretty easy. Kinda mad I didnt do it a while ago.

I dont like any of the 5 round mags I have tried so this is what I did last year.

Magpul 20rn mag

Cheap easy and it works

Years ago, Colt shipped some ARs with 5 round magazines. All they were was a 20 round magazine with a spacer limiting capacity to 5 rounds and the floorplate was riveted in place.

IMHO, the easiest way to make a 5 round mag is to use a 20 round mag with a spacer in it. No magazine cutting involved, just the spacer. MI VHNTR

I had an extra plug laying around...

Anyone that's used the old 870 should catch that! Like the resourcefullness though, looks like something I would do! Out of one gun, into the other!

I made the ridiculous decision to go out hunting with one of my dad's shotguns one day when I went out to their house after work. I had some time to burn before dinner was ready and thought would go do some dove hunting. Not thinking, I took his gun out that he used for quail season the year before which he left unplugged. Long story short, I was sittin on my dove bucket not three minutes when I saw the game warden headed my way. I only had three shells in the gun, two in the mag and one in the chamber because my personal philosophy is that if I cant hit a bird with three shots, I suck anyhow and need to just wait till another one fly's over. Anyhow, while he parked, I broke off a piece of dry mesquite branch and shoved one of those suckers down my magazine as a quick fix. He ended up checking my gun and as it turned out my measurements were off a hair and he was able to force a third shell down the magazine. He thought it was pretty clever and actually gave me a brand new plug he found in his truck. Needless to say, it saved me a nice little ticket, and he ended up being one of the nicest wardens I have met. I actually have so much respect for him now that I make sure everything I do is 100% legal. Not for fear of a ticket, but for fear I might dissappoint the guy. HaHa

The top pic is actually a completed mag. I did this because #1 its cheap you can buy these mags at gun shows for like $10-15, I aquired mine and #2 I didnt want the huge mag hangin out only carrying 5rnds #3 all the reviews Ive read from people that carry five rounders is that none of them feed well and these feed great. all I have into these is the cost of jb-weld and some time which wasnt much time.

My Colt AR came with two 20 round magazines that were limited to 5 rounds by a metal spacer inside the magazine. This was in the early 80's. The floorplates on mine were not riveted but removable. I like the idea of adding a internal spacer instead of cutting a good 30 or 40 rd magazine.

Yeah, I used an old Colt 20-round and built a pair of "stop blocks" for the (aluminum) follower. Drilled and tapped through the mag body front and rear. I would have liked it shorter, but I wanted to keep the stock spring length, because I was worried about possible reliability problems.
This way, it's just like a 20 round mag loaded with only 5, and it works perfectly.

Crazy state law here says semi-autos have a 5 round magazine limit when used for big game, and since I've got a cougar tag, I must comply.
