DIY scope ring lapping bar

This may be a stupid question and maybe I am missing something so excuse my ignorance if this is the case. Anyways, I was looking into getting a lapping kit as I don't have one and feel as though I need one. They are $40 everywhere I have seen so I am looking to get opinions on whether or not it is a good idea to use 1" precision ground steel shafting.

Here's a link to some link It is $13 for 7"

Thanks for any advice

I sure do as it will amaze you how often the two rings are off enough to only show that maybe 20/30% of the bar is making contact (same as your scope tube would) I like to lap them in till at least 75% is contacting the bar on each ring, for any gun. High dollar stuff we get them 90/100% . And having a little torque driver is really handy to know you are applying exact torque down onto each screw. For a set of $5 bases and a low end scope,it probably isnt as big a deal.....

I never lap, but I always torque everything to manufacturers' specs.
I quit lapping years ago when I started using good quality rings.

The pointy bars in the lapping kits are worse than worthless.

Exactly. Unless it's going on a low quality rifle where the bases may be out of alignmemt
