Well, my DNT Zulus 3x12 arrived and I got to play with it a bit. It’s small! Being used to my old ATN X-Sights and now my AGM Spectrum tube digital night vision, it pales in comparison size-wise, like half their size.
The one I ordered is not the LRF model. The integrated infrared light is pretty anemic but I’m a staunch Sniper Hog Light Hyperion user. But it does work, only thing I’m not yet sure about is how long the one 18650 battery will last as I haven’t used it for more than an hour. I have a bunch of back-up 18650’s and a large capacity reserve battery that I hang on my tripod that should make available power a non--issue as long as I’m in a blind and on a tripod.
The digital image quality is stellar. Truly impressive. Crystal clear during daylight and darkness (with a decent IR light). Refresh rate is more than acceptable. As I said, I’m an AGM user so the DNT button functions are driving me nuts as I’m not at all used to the layout and function. Took me 10 minutes to set the time and then back out of that menu. The “manual” that came with it is no help at all. Just have to figure out how each function works on my own. Wi-Fi and app connected and work fine although initial video transfer to my phone was a little jerky. Once downloaded the files played smoothly.
The function buttons are SMALL and they all have the same shape on top so in total darkness finding the right one will be an adventure. The zoom wheel is totally way to small and will be impossible to use with gloves on. The objective focus ring is partially blocked by the integrated IR light / battery compartment making focus a little more difficult than it has to be. The removable 18650 battery is super common and a nice choice for power.
I’ve yet to play with all the functions but it sure is feature packed. Base magnification at 3x works for me, at 12x it’s still acceptably clear. Here in my area in NY where I do most of my hunting, a 100 - 150 yard shot is about max. Factory loaded reticle choices are so-so. As long as it holds zero it should be a keeper.
That’s about it until I get the time to learn and play with all the features. As of now, I think it was more than worth the $383.00 (which included NY tax and free shipping). What rifle it will reside on is yet to be determined but if all goes well they are only $383 …….
