The last coon I called in was back in March.I had spotted it in a tree before even calling. It just sat there and looked at the light until I began calling with my Burnaham Bros. mini blaster.Once I started calling it quit looking at the light and I guess made his way outta the tree and began sneaking my via the creek bed about 40 yards away.
I thought I had just scared him off because I never seen his eyes again.(about the way my luck runs sometimes)
I continued calling hoping to maybe call up a bobcat or a coyote.(I actually thought this might have been a bobcat in the tree)Then I thought I would check out the tree under the full beam and full power on my scope.I studied the tree thinking maybe the bobcat had just moved to another branch and wasn't interested in my call.Racoon never even entered my mind(I kept thinking it was a bobcat)I went back to blowing on the call and scanning the area to no avail, nothing was even looking my way. Then the wind died down to nothing and I heard the grass rustle beside my Bronco about 15 feet away,I shined my light and wah lah! There is this boar kinda setting on his haunches with his right paw raised in the air like he wanted to fight. It all happened so fast I swung my chair around and got him in my scope all 14X power and all.(I forgot to lower the power setting after scanning the tree)Needless to say at that range all I could see in my scope was a ball of blurred fur.I looked over my scope as I didn't have time to turn the power down and took the shot.I hit him square in the chest and he dropped like a rock.
up until the time I seen him I thought I was calling a bobcat.
This is twice this has happend to me the last time I had a big sow coon jump out from behind a cedar tree and scare the sh!# outta me( I thought it was a bobcat wanting to climb in my lap)I pointed seen fur and shot, only to find out when I went to pick it up it was a coon.
Here is a pick of the big sow I took.just for comparison the bbl on my ar is 16"
