Thinking of taking a course and getting my permit. Do I really need it? Like to hear opinions from those that do and those that don't.

I should add, I usually don't carry a weapon unless coming or going to the range, hunting, gun show, ect. Lots of people say I need one?????

It definitely depends on your State laws, and the laws of any other states you may visit...

In MO, anyone 23 yoa (non-felon) and over can have one in their vehicle, without a CC permit and the Castle Doctrine applies to their vehicle, just like their dwelling...But they cannot carry it on their person concealed...They can carry it openly, but need to expect to be checked by local LEOs...

Any person from out-of-state can carry one in their vehicle while "on a peaceful journey" through the state...But what isn't stated in the law is that any "Breach of the Peace" can throw them into violation and even excessive speed or other traffic violation, has been known to constitute a "Breach of the Peace" in some local jurisdictions..

If you carry a loaded and concealed weapon in Oklahoma it is a felony if you don't have the conceal permit.

I have had mine since they started the program and always have mine with me when I ride motorcycles but other than that I don't carry that often.

I'm not for sure in Oklahoma but in KS they just changed the law so you can bypass the NICS background checks on firearms if you have a current CCH license. You still fill out the 4473, but it's less hassle for both the gunshop and no delays. That in itself is nice, but being able to LEGALLY have a loaded pistol on yourself or in your vehicle at any time is definitely worth the little bit of paperwork for a permit.

Here in AZ, we don't need to have one to carry concealed anymore.

I choose to have one to carry in other states that have reciprocity with AZ and it makes it so much easier when you buy firearms. The 4473 has a spot for carry permit holders to avoid having to call it in to the Feds(or local depending on state)

Just my .02 cents.

Texas you don't have to have one if you have your pistol concealed in your vehicle. You do need one if you are intending to carry it on your person though. My 10c, go get one, it can save a lot of hassle. Remember, you might beat the rap...but you won't beat the ride!

You should probaly get it, but as usual the law abiding citizen gets screwed. In my state if you have your permit there are many places you cant carry... Gov buildings, places of assembly, churches, schools, any place that sells alcohol for consumption and on and on. You pretty much cant carry anywhere but Wal-mart and your car. God bless Arizona.

That's pretty much the case anywhere. While each state has it's own little quirks, most abide by those same rules.

Likewise, the Concealed Carry Permit on 4473 is all states to my knowledge. Doesn't relieve the FFL from reporting the sale, simply eliminates the waiting period for background check on your part. That alone is worth the permit in my book. Local gun shop owner pushed them on most of his repeat customers, and he's a deputy. Saves time, saves aggravation, increases his sales!

Got mine, because I can keep the gun in the truck loaded. Otherwise, in ND, a handgun has to be empty. And, empty handguns ain't much good in a shootout, unless you got a real good throwing arm!

I got one for the state of Iowa. The main reason that I got it was that when I am out yote hunting with one of my ar's and get done with a stand and get back to the truck to head to another location I do not have to unload the entire magazine to make me legal to travel down the road. Or when I go some place to shoot. I also have it because no one could give me a solid answer on if I was legal to transport a pistol in a case or holster located in the rear cargo area of my Yukon. State law requires it to be in a case or holster out of access from the drivers compartment. Had a couple HP officers that I know and hunt with that could not give me a solid answer. Plus protection on the road at night.

Get it and excersize your second amendment rights to their fullest.

I have a lifetime Indiana LTCH permit that covers any aspect of me carrying that gun concealed or openly off my property including on me in the car, out in public, out hunting or fishing, etc etc.

Best money I have ever spent for having more peace of mind in a uncertain world..

Here in WI we will soon have ccw. My take on the original question is - what are the advantages and disadvantages of carrying. If you can get a permit but choose not to, why not? We have open carry here, but nobody does. Various reasons I suppose.

Jeffo - as a CCW holder since 1995 in Virginia and now Florida and not being a LEO, here is just my own two cents. This goes for the OP as well.

Advantages - Peace of mind in an uncertain world 24/7. Easier transport of firearms while in a vehicle. Easier purchase of firearms in most jurisdictions.

Disadvantages - Training and practice required. Carrying the firearm itself as you must keep it concealed from the public at large and comfort can become an issue without the right equipment. The personal responsibility factor goes way, way up by default. Your awareness of what facilities you may and may not carry within to be lawful is critical. You must be mentally and legally prepared for the possibility of lethal self-defense for yourself and your family.

Those are just a few off the top of my head. It's a personal decision that must not be taken lightly as you have to be proactive about how, when, and where you carry and what the law says about how, when, and where you carry.

It's like the difference between riding a motorcycle and driving a car. You have to be 5X higher on your responsibility and awareness factors to keep yourself out of harm's way. I hope this helps.

I would think it largely depends on the area you live in.

If one would live in a "Mayberry" type place where crime and violence don't exist or the propensity for it is very low, they may not feel inclined to get the permit.

Others, such as myself who live in fringe war zone areas might be more inclined to carry and do.

The way I see it, the criminal element are carrying so given the right I will do so also to give myself an even advantage to the scum.

I have also been shot at, mugged and also lost friends to criminal gun violence which in itself is a definate added incentive to have the means to protect my life.

The bottom line though would be to each his own I guess

Not around here. Open carry will get you some funny looks, but CC is no problem at the Wally World. In fact, I carry routinely in three states (NM, AZ, and TX) and the only place I've seen a sign posted on a place that one could otherwise carry was at the IHOP in Cas Grande, AZ. I walked up, saw the sign, and turned around and had lunch somewhere else.
