Do Ruger ring bases work like quick-detachable?

My Ruger has those special machined areas where the ring bases clamp to the action. It would seem I could remove my scope, then reinstall and be pretty darn close to previous POI because you are (more or less) going back down onto the same spots.

Does it work this way in the real world or is there too much play? I'm talking POI at 100 yards.

wahoowad,
I own a few Ruger M77 Models (both Mark I and Mark II) that have the exact receiver mounts that you described and that most Rugers have. For me, I've not even considered "quick disconnect" rings and not even sure any rings manufacture makes them for Rugers. But in the event you are able to find some, I'd be willing to give it a try if I wanted to find out or to test my theory. Now I have recently switched scopes on two of Rugers (one MKI & the other an MKII) and they lined up pretty successfully in terms of the slots in the receivers. They were two different manufacturers scopes so I had to re-zero each of them. And both are shot at 100 yds regularly. Hope thar helps.

I'm referring to using the factory Ruger rings that Ruger supplies with new rifles. It would seem they can only bolt into those recesses such that one could remove them (with scope attached) and they would then go back into those recesses when you reinstall. Curious if anybody has done this and how your POI changed.

You will be close but not dead nutz on, kind of the same deal with weaver or their style mounts. I have had scopes on and off with these mounting systems and you are never right on the money when you put them back on. HTH.....

I think i would be afraid to try that. If you didn't tighten the bases exactly the same way they were on the original gun I am afraid that is going to exert a torque on your scope. I wouldn't do it just for the simple fact I wouldn't want to take a chance of something happening to my scope. I would at leaste loosen the rings so the torque is not applied.

How is it different for standard quick-disconnect rings?

It is very close. You will need to tweak it but majority of the time it would have been fine for calling distances.

Just make sure the rings lock down correctly. They can tighten up and not be locked down tight on the receiver. Don't ask me how I know. You'll see a slight gap between the ring and receiver if this occurs.

I'm actually gonna get another set of the factory rings to run two scopes. Doesn't take but a shot or two to rezero.

They will be close but you should always check.

Warne also makes quick-detachable rings for #1s and 77s.
