Do You Think It's the Bears

This year I’m well behind my average coyote sightings and shot opportunities. None on my cameras, only actually saw two in late September and they were trotting to somewhere else with a purpose. And only heard a pack vocalize once since then. No response to anything from my electronic caller, and I’ve been out a bunch of times.

Are the bears the problem you think? Didn’t see not one bear last year. This year seems to be a banner year. We’re talking a relatively small area with no less than 6, probably more like 8 different bears. The club I belong to where I hunt over bait is only 160 acres surrounded by 800-900 acres of public land. But I’m seeing and getting pictures of bears every single night.

A sow with 3 cubs she hatched early this year (small, lap dog size). 4 others that hang together (all in the same photo so I know there’s 4) all the same size. Maybe 125 – 150lbs, so that makes them what, going on 2 years old. And 2 very large, very fat adults pushing 350-400. I thought they were supposed to disperse when they get out on their own.

They’re becoming a real pain in the ass. They’ve been trashing guys pop-up deer hunting ground blinds at night, destroying their trail cams.

The bait I put out in the afternoon was gone that night so I only did that once. Cameras showing nothing but deer and bear pics. One of our club members shot one of the 125# yesterday but that hasn’t deterred the others from hanging around. Not enough guys killing them off.

I’m wondering if I’m going to have to wait until they (hopefully) go and take a nap for a month or two before I can bait and shoot some coyotes. Although we’ve had recent years where I’ve seen them out in the snow in January. Must be that global warming thing. Anyway….., just complaining because I’m curious and quite envious of you guys that are out now shooting them.

It would seem like it’s something to do with the bears, Don. You say you’re behind your average and the biggest change is the bears from the sounds of it.

I would think on your better years though, you would have a consistent bait setup. If I read correctly, you baited only once to have that devoured quickly by the bears. With no bait it would seem pointless. I doubt it’s just the presence of bears that is keeping them away. More like they just don’t have a reason to come there.

You’re calling without success as well. Again, you gotta have ears to reach. What sounds are you trying? How often?
