a friend tond me that Cold Steel Knives were the best out there but most of then run under $30 so that make me wonder about their quality does any one know if they are any good??
WQhat type knife are you looking for? Cold Steel is imported usually from Tiawan, China, Or Indonesia. The quality is so -so for a mass produced, factory made knife. I prefer Shrade or Gerber myself. In factory Knives and Randall for custom, there are many makers out there, one thing about Cold Steel is they use pretty good Knife steels I would stay away from the 440 stuff go with the O1 or other good high carbon stainless steels you just have to research it and don't fall for the slick hype. A kife is the oldest tool man has excpt maybe the hammer.
I bought one of those Cold Steel master Hunters, I think its called.Used it twice and put it away. You don't necessarily have to get a Randall, but like with everything else, you get what you pay for.
Take a look online at the AG Russell catalog. Also, check out Benchmade, for a factory knife I think they are pretty good.
I have always liked Cold Steel knives.I have one that I use to skin coyotes and other critters with.I skinned several coyotes with it last year and its still razor sharp. My uncle has one also that he uses to gut deer with and its sharper than mine is and its never even been sharpened.Hes field dressed 2 or 3 deer with his.I also like Gerber,Buck, and Case knives.Benchmade and Cold Steel are my favorites though.
Fella outta Idaho made me the best Hunting knife I ever owned!Sharp as a razor and good for a couple Elk or several deer on a sharping touch up.Forget what steel it is. Puma are good knive tell they need sharpen. Then they are like Old buck knives.Just give em away or toss em as they are a pain to resharpen.I think I left my last one stuck in a tree some place for someone else to play with. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Puma is the best for production knives. If yours gets dull and if you will pay shipping both ways, I will sharpen them free for you. OH- I sharpen 3-5000 knives a year. I have made a few and I like them. I only use ATS-34 and they work.
Flame suit on.....

Almost any name brand is good, be careful not to get steel that is too hard. A balance, hard enough to hold an edge, but not too hard to sharp-up.
I gotta say, I also agree with Ian, about Cold Steel knives, I rate them right in there with Old Hickory kitchen knives. purty much junk.

First consideration is the use you intend to put the knife to? Until we know that it's hard to give good advise.
I would have to respectfully disagree with you on the hardness. If they are done right with a tight molecule, you can put a much thinner edge for cutting with the harder steel. Not a pry bar. JMHO.

How true. I have several, and they are "best" for different tasks. A quite a few of them are Gerbers of various persuasions. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I prefer Spyderco for my pocket knives. Just picked up an SV30 Native a few weeks ago and I'm extremely pleased with it. Still have my Endura in ATS 34 my wife gave me before we got married. The ATS 34 is good steel, but so far the SV30 has more edge holding.
I also bought some of the D2 Knives of Alaska. Good knives, but not stainless. I wish I had bought the SV30 models. Still sharp and tough though.
im looking to get a boot knife i like the Gerber Gaurdian, SOG Pentagon, and KaBar TDI large or the S&W H.R.T are these good/ or do you have any other suggestions
Cold Steel is total junk in my opinion. They rip off everyone elses designs and produce stuff in China and Taiwan out of crappy steel. They make a knife called the AK-47 for crying out loud. They have even made a "tactical sarong"!(Whas sarong with dat?) I kid you not. Order their free video and watch how stupid they are, then go buy a Benchmade or an Emerson.
