Lots of good information, and tips for getting the barrel to shoot well. Proper headspace is essential to making them perform, and pillar bedding the fore arm is another thing that adds to accuracy.

Another great place to learn about the platform is

Well, if you would have seen me a few years back, I was
carrying an Encore pistol version to the deer blind.
I struggled to get the thing to shoot. I have a Savage
Striker(bolt action pistol), that shoots .5 MOA, so I can
shoot pistols. Both the Encore, and the Striker are
chambered in 308 Win. But this pretty Encore(SS/Composite)
was all looks and no shoot. On a good day, it was a 4 MOA.
And I did every accuracy trick short of over sized pins.
It went back to T/C and they "recrowned" it which made it
a 2.5 MOA for the best groups. I traded it, and purchased
a Savage rifle...Best trade I ever made. My brother had
a T/C Encore rifle, also in 308 Win, that lasted one season,
and he traded his, too. It was an average shooter, at best,
and my brother was smarter than I was. He didn't waste
time, or money, attempting to accurize it.

So no, in my neck of the woods, I don't see anyone carrying
Encores any more. Too many rifles come out of the box,
shooting much better than the two Encores I am familiar
with, for less money.

Nope don't use an Encore....decided to handicap myself even further by using a Contender in carbine form. To be quite honest I fail to see the problem. Unless something has changed with modern hunting firearms that I don't know about they all shoot only one shot at a time.
I am not quite sure why it matters to anyone but me what I use for a weapon. They have proven very effective and thats all I ask for.
No I am not from the east and yes I hunt everything that CO has to offer.

SKB,

Great answer!

That brings up a queston. There are several different catgories of firearm types these days we use to hunt with.

I know in my personal hunting arsenal I have the following "types" of rifles & pistols:

Lever Action- open sights
Lever Action-scoped
Bolt Action
Ar15-scoped
Pump Shotgun
Lever Action Shotgun
Semi-Auto Shotgun
Semi Auto rimfire-open sights
Single Action Revolver
1911 Pistol

As I said, the choice is broad for me. I have little prejudice, & have taken game with vertually every one of them.

I DO have my Favs for different types of hunting.

What you brought up is a simple explination of why we choose what we do to hunt with.

It's a PERSONAL choice & as we grow older, or have other factors come into our hunting & terrain experience, the choices we use may change somewhat, but nonetheless are still personal in reasons we hunt with them.

I think each of us ought to respect a fellow huinter's choice when it comes to what they use. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Some may not like the "Evil Black Rifle", or some would not like a pistol of any kind, but we ought to respect & cherish our freedom of choice.
It has & continues to be a long, hard fought battle for us to retain the RIGHT to choose what we hunt & shoot with.

WE ought to be united on that stand, at least. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I know I'd fight for everyone's right to carry & use whatever firearm or caliber they choose.

That's a no brainer!

Yep I use a pretty good variety myself

break action rifles
break action pistols
bolt rifles
lever rifle (haven't actually used it yet but it will be used)
revolvers
semi autos
pump shoutguns
semi auto shotguns
bolt shotguns

They all have more range than my bow which will kill anything I desire to hunt.

I actually use one and I like it a lot. It is a nice compact rifle and every barrel that I have owned has shot MOA or better. Even the 50 cal ML. The only thing I wish was different was the grip or palm swell or whatever you want to call it. It is just to big around for me, but it is more of an anoyance than a problem. My 7mm/08 pistol is .7 moa with factory loads, I haven't got any reloads made yet. (too lazy)

Really the sponsor thing is hilarious. I don't care what anyone wants to use to hunt. But I heard Jim Shockey preach about the romanticism of using ML's to hunt. I personally find it funny when the traditionalist guys or prohunters who use an encore with pellets, sabots or powerbelts, and a nikon omega with a BDC reticle or $1200 swarovski because it is more challenging or something. I don't buy the whole I like to do it the ol fashioned way. Seems like these guys are more like the holier than thou crowd.

Just an observation from my experiences

This coyote didn't seem to mind that i was using a single shot specialty pistol 6.5-284 XP-100--

http://www.perry-systems.com/what_others_have_to_say.htm#Steve

I'm going out later this afternoon locally with the same XP, this time in 6.5 WSM/8.5-25X Leupold Mk. 4.

I also use a SS .17 Mach IV XP-100 for fur hunting, and love it.

In 2004 we competed with our SS XP's in the International Tactical Rifleman's Championship in Gillette, WY, and placed in the 50th percentile range with them. This against police and military sniper teams using AR's and long-range rifles.

I'll be the 1st to admit tho that i couldn't keep up with a fast-handling rifle with an experienced shooter behind it on coyotes especially. I just like the challenge and reward of taking coyotes with the SP's. And like some said very few others r doing it.

I also use my AR too though, so...?

Close to the end of the year there should be an article in TVHM mag. entitled, "Long-Range Coyotes and the Custom Specialty Pistol."

I own and use an Encore a fair amount. When I first bought it I started with a .50 MZ a .223, and a 7mm mag barrel. The MZ has always shot well once I found a load it liked, the 7mm never did shoot very well, and the .223 shoots well now, but did require some tweaking to get it there. I think that the rifle is similar to any other factory rifle. Some are great, some good, some not so good. I have enjoyed tinkering with the different barrels, and am currently happy with it, use it a bunch, and will definately hang on to it.

With that said, if I had it to do over I may have just gone with bolt guns. I probably could have bought two savages and a T/C Omega MZ for not much more that what I am into my Encore w/barrels and it seems my chances for having good shooting rifles would have been a little better. Who knows??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I had one years ago and was always surprised at how well they shot, sometimes the TC barrel would beat the custom barrel. Most accurate calibers for me were the .223 and 35 Rem.

I dont have many pictures of the trophy room, but there are well over 300 animals in it. Every single animal was killed with an Encore besides for 20-30 animals which were killed with a bow.

Here is one picture, i'm sorry, but it doesn't show much.

I have 2 Encores and 2 Pro hunters. I have had good accuracy results with all four and have never felt handicapped with "ONE" shot. It's all I hunt with anymore
except I may drag a Ruger #1 out on occasion.

And I do hunt in the east.

It's difficut to argue with his results. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

You bet I use one! As a rifle and a pistol, each are custom Shilen barrels the rifle a [257 AI] and the pistol [7 x 57 AI] both are outstanding shooters. As a lefty I can have a custom chambering for ½ the cost of doing a left hand 700. These coyotes have not complained!

257 AI off the bench @ 300 Yards 75 grain Vmax @ 3552 fps, using a Burris BP holding Marker 1 spot on = 1/2 group!

This is "Thumper" Encore pistol in 7 x 57 AI
