Does anyone use just one powder for different calibers?

I still use blc-2 in both my .223 & .220 swift.
I do have plenty of 748 & Varget on hand when I cant find blc2.

I have found Varget works pretty well in a variaty of chamberings, but so does IMR 3031 I have used it in 223, 308,3006 and 45-70 but it is not perfect for all them I have been looking for a good load useing Varget in my 45-70 but I do not think there is one It works pretty well in the 243 WSSM AR and in my 270 WSM Savage. I think it is sort of like rifle chamberings you just ain't gonna find one that will do everything.

Well WolferC, the wind and cold hasn't run you to Texas??

All I had to do is ask you. I would have gotten, "well if I tell you,...I'll have to kill you." Har!
It has been a slow year for me. Nursing a bad back now.
I liped squeaked a fox from 180 yds to about 20 feet yesterday. Right up to my back porch. Just sat there an watched us. Maybe looking for a hand out.
Thanks for the info everybody.

I'm another varget lover. I use it for 223, 22-250, 6Br, 7- 08, 308, and I plan to try it in my 35 Whelen. I use H4831sc for my 270 and 300 Win mag. I use blue dot for 38 special, 357 mag, and 41 mag. I have other powders but these thre are the only powders I buy 8 pouds at a time.

I've probably not been re-loading as long as some of you older guys, but I'm kind of in the same boat. I have used IMR4895 in my .270,.243,.35rem. I get good results in the .270 and .243, but lacking in accuracy in my .35. It shoots well with factory ammo, but can't seem to duplicate it with re-loads using 4895? I also think it's a bit dirty. I'd like to find a powder that would work well in any of these calibers that burns a bit cleaner. Would Varget be a good choice in the larger calibers? I know from what I've read here that it is a good choice for the smaller calibers, but what about the bigger bores?

I am going to try h335 in my 223 and 35 whelen, and then Im going to try h4831 in my 243 wssm and 270. Well see how this goes.

I pulled up a powder comparison chart off of reloadbench.com and it shows the burn rates of just about every powder imaginable. The Varget came in at #117 on a list of 173 different powders. It's actually slower burning than the IMR4895 that I've been using. Varget might be what I need for a bigger caliber like my .35remington? But, the guys here also say it's a good choice in their .223's and .204's>>>any comments on these findings?

One thing to keep in mind about the "approximate burn rate" charts in the manuals....they are based upon the burn rate "at moment of ignition", and don't account for the powder's "vivacity", which is its burn rate once it's under pressure. Most powders increase in burn rate once aflame and under pressure, and at that point, the burn rate listed in the manuals doesn't mean much.

For example, according to most burn rate charts, IMR4350 is "faster" than H4350. But, once ignited and under increasing pressure, H4350 reaches it's peak faster and "holds" this pressure curve longer. And a projectiles "time under pressure" is a major contributing factor to it's final velocity. You can actually get noticeably faster velocity with the Hodgdon powder than you can with the IMR powder, all else equal, and given suitable bullet weights.

I have never been so lucky. But I have 43 kinds of powder in stock for trying.....

I've used Varget and H322 side by side and found I like H322 better. H322 performs better velocity wise and it takes less grains to do it. I couldn't get enough Varget in the case with my 223 40gr loads. H322 isn't as temp sensitive as I've found H335 to be either.

Varget for me in my .308 and Rem 700 chambered in .223.

I load Benchmark in my .223 AR just because I didn't like having the powder right to the top of the case with Varget. Loading on my old progressive system was a pain with the powder spilling all the time.

I just bought some Varget today. I'm going to give it a try. I hope my .35 likes it. From what I've read here, I think it should work fine in my .243 and .270. I guess I'll find out? I was looking in a re-loading book at the shop and it showed that Varget vs IMR is about the same amount of grains of powder for the loads that I've been using. I have got to get a new re-loading manual! My two that I have are so old that they don't even list Varget. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Anybody got any input on that?
