Hey guys, my brothers dog just got laid open on his front leg pretty **** bad, and is bleeding like a stuck hog. He has a cut artery. My folks and one of our friends are stitching him up as I'm typing, what's the best way to stop an artery???
Any help is [beeep] apreciated.
Thank you,

Ben Zimmerman

If you're sure it's an artery, you'd better get him to the Vet ASAP.

Keep DIRECT PRESSURE on the area, and get him to a VET.

Well, praise be to The Lord, they got it closed up, and are stitching him up! He lost quite a bit of blood, but they've got it closed up and the bleeding. And anyway, we live 100 miles(literally) to the nearest Vet.
Thank you anyway Jeff. Hopefully he'll make it, he lost alot of blood.

At the feed store you can get some powder that will help to clot up the blood. Corn starch will also work in a pinch. It is a natural coagulant which is why your mom uses it to thicken gravy. Good luck to you Ben, and the dog.

He's been walking really well. We followed his blood last night and we found what cut him. He got snagged on the tin cover of a well.

Ben that tin is not friendly to animals one bit! You really have to watch out for it if you have any types of livestock/pets..

I have a good friend who is a well known horse trainer in our area. To make a long story short he was doing some work on his horse shed and through the spare tin in between two buildings as he was in a hurry to get to town.

Two of a customers pride horses got in between the buildings and got in a tangle with the tin. It cut up there legs so badly they had to be put down. The amount of blood lost was un-real. In-fact one of the horses died from blood loss. This wall all from a load of scrap tin he had been working on the roof with.

You really have to be careful like you said. Im really happy your dog is ok

Yikes Mitch, that's awful! Our female dog, this one's mother, got cut by our well this summer, but her's just peeled the skin, and was no real danger. A little super glue fixed her right up.

That caused Dad to take tinsnips and round the corners of our well.

Quik Clot saves lives and is the only product that is 98% effective on stoping artery bleeding. The only thing that comes close is a Bagdad bandge at 50% effectiveness. We are reqiered to carry Quik Clot on all our EMS trucks. Then once you get it under control you need to use an artery carterizer to carterize the vein or artery before you close the wound. Carterizers can be bought from Revival Animal Health.
