Dogs and Coyotes at night

I don't decoy, but I run coyotes with running walkers, and all summer when it is too hot to run during the day, I run at night. Probably wouldn't work out well with decoy dogs though. Maybe I'm wrong though, I have been wrong once before!
 
Im going to go out and try and get some coyotes tonight and was just wondering if it would be a problem to drop them out at night. I will be putting reflective collars on them so that they are not mistaken for a coyote.
Whats everyone think?

I assume you are calling coyotes. I use Gunner on every night stand. I have a lighted LED collar that he wears. He stays on the ground by the hunting rig. It'll save your butt in finding shot coyotes. His main job at night is recovery work, but he's decoyed in a handful at night doing it. I haven't lost a single shot coyote, bobcat, hog, etc.. yet, since I've been taking him.

I use mine at night for recovery and decoying. I use different color LED's to keep track of the dogs and it doesn't seem to bother the coyotes at all. I also run them with Garmin GPS collars and it makes finding them and a wounded coyote very easy.
I started just having them around for recovery but quickly saw that they are capable of much more and let them work like a traditional decoy dog does during daylight. I only hunt them during the full moon and don't use any lights. Just the LED on the dogs collar and the moonlight.
I only use them when I'm hunting by myself. It tends to get wild quick with decoy dogs and it's even worse at night. I always use 2 dogs and have not had any problems yet outside of what you would encounter during the day. Coyotes respond well to the dogs at night. They seem less afraid and more in their element. I guess that they are more confident under darkness and think that they have the advantage so they respond to the dogs better then they would in the same open field during daylight.
I only use them on private land and always let the landowner know I will be hunting with dogs at night. Keeps them from getting involved in a "friendly fire" incident.

One thing I did learn from the dogs is that I never would have beileved how many coon respond to predator calls that you never see. Not a problem with a couple of curs around. They tree or catch a couple coon just about every night I use them.

We run all summer, spring, and early fall at night with the hounds. It is just to hot in the day time. They tend to stay in one area a little easier at night instead of just blowing out of the country. They also tend to want to bay up or fight easier at night. We usually just call when we first get there if we have one or however many howl bag the dogs will feed into the howls. If not we drop 2-3 of our best jump dogs and they will get something up. It might not always be a coyote it may be a fox or kitty, but they will get something going eventually. We try to hunt areas we know that are really concentrated with coyotes in the summer and fall and we usually do well. We dont run to shoot only way they will die this time of the year is if the dogs kill them. We usually start gun hunting during the day from October until early March.

If you are trying to run decoy dogs at night I know nothing about it.
 
Didn't get them out last night because of where I was hunting, but did get them out around five this morning. They were pretty good. Stayed off of me while I called. No response from the coyotes, but Im going to start getting out atleast two or three days a week now that its cooling down. I just need to get some yotes under their belts.

One thing that I did realize this morning though is how fast these dogs cover desert. I think I need a new e collar system that will reach out to them.

Bull do you use the Garmin collars on your hounds at night? We getting to that time of the year where things are heating up action wise but tempretures as well. Want to hunt at night now as well. Is there a garmin transmitter one can give to a guy on foot so you can coordinate his position in relation to the hounds?

Ya we use all Garmins on the dogs. We have about 12 collars or so between 3-4 guys. The only way you see a person would be to give him a collar to put in his bag or pocket or what not. There is not a little device to give him to see where he is at unfortunately. If you buy more then one main unit then who ever is carrying the unit can see where any dog is you have out as long as you add the dogs collar number to your list. I would be interested in the range you could get out of the collars over there I would think it would be drastically higher then here in the mountains.
 
I have clients put a "collar" in their pack when we are hunting "Biggame", so I can find them easy if they get "lost".
The Garmins are a handy tool.

I'll get some extra collars and just adapt them for use on people. Might suggest to garmin that it is something they could consider. It can be used many ways , hunting and military.

Bull I was out 2 days ago and we have plains area's here but lots of mountains and canyons ( gorges ) so I expect the same limitations you guys will have under those circumstances.

I still put out dogs with the Wildlife Materials collars as a backup. These garmins are very useful though , I can see them being used in training to. We also found a kill the dogs made that we normally would never have got so there's another advantage.

While were on this subject, has anyone looked into the new Tri tronics "tracer" light that you can turn on and off from the remote?
Looks like it could be cool for hunting with dogs at night.

They are really nice but they are a lot of money. I use tracker flashes on my dogs, and a guy that hunts with us as those sunburst collars there nice, but also cost money.
 
I don't want lights on my dogs. I know where they are, and would just asoon not give some "!@#$" a target. I will not run lights on the collars. Just my thoughts. Duane
 
These lights can be turned on and off remotely. Would only be used in certain country when trying to locate the dogs. I may try them... Im saveing up for a Trashbraker system. Any reviews of this system would be great

Trashbreaker is great !!! Can't tell ya about the lights.
The lights on the Garmins are just bright enough to show ya they work. You can't see them at any distance, they also are pointed down, when the collar is on the dog.
