I have been hunting coyotes for a few years never experienced this before i have heard them howl BUT.. last night was on a hill overlooking several other hills and valleys about dark heard barking on the hill top across the valley 1/4 mile away sounded like 3-4 the barking was in the woods and they seemed to be in two different areas about 100yrds apart. there are no homes so i don't think it was dogs, I tried howling and they just barked among themselves, i had one howl but it was opposite area behind me. so Dogs or Yotes? I can hunt the area so is it worth it, whats your opinon and suggestions welcome

If there were no houses near by I would guess they were coyotes. Get your howler out and go to work.
Sounds like they watched and or smelled you on your way in. Barking is bad but I learned not to give up when you have nothing to loose.
On a stand in early Feb I had one start barking a 150 yds away (I think based on the noise). I switched sounds from Hare distress to coyote pup distress and let it go for 30 seconds and then silence. Well A few minutes latter there she is at 10yards and my gun is on my lap. I finally got to take her as she angled away at 16 yards. I was hoping she was going to by pass me and get to my partner for his first coyote but that didnt happen.
If you go back stay a bit away from where you heard the barking in case its a bedding area and call with different noises than previously used and try a different spot ti call from if you must get in on the same area.

Last time I went out I called in 4 domestic dogs. We were miles and miles and miles from the nearest house. For all I know they were being road worked, on a training session or they could have been there for any number of other reasons. That is why I didn't/won't shoot under those circumstances. Last year I saw a birddog run out in front of a partner. The birdhunter was just out of view. My partner raised his gun, but held off until he could see the whole dog. Fortunately he saw the birdhunter before dropping the hammer.
