a lab will hunt and try to kill almost anything with very little encouragement. they have a strong hunting drive. but most will tree and stay treed as long as any treeing hound one thing they won't do is bark treed. so you have a hard time locating them. my big yellow lab hunts anything and has killed many cats,possums,coons as well as snakes, mice and whatever else is furry and moves. but a good tree hound hes not. i've found him missing before all night and upon looking around there he was setting under a tree staring at a coon or cat not making a sound.
he can trail but mainly a lab runs hot trails only. mine has a amazing sense of winding a animal. he picks up the smell on the wind then heads after it. i've witnessed him doing this a few times. his head comes up sniffing the wind off he goes and he will tree a cat over on the next hill maybe 300 yards away. the breed is bred to hunt by sight and smell its not a trail hound or a tree hound. but a gundog that goes and retrives downed geese and ducks mainly. of course they love to hunt about anything. they are a fairly rough dog. mine will mix it up with other dogs more than i ever thought a lab would before i owned one. hes a big strong dog and very smart. suffer any coon or possum he can catch. for a possum dog a coon hound or mt cur would be a better choice though.
lol a lab not too bright? a lab is a very smart dog. they aren't bred to trail and tree. so man has developed different dog breeds to serve his needs. its not fair to say because a lab doesn't hunt like a hound and tree hes not bright. if you was to take a coon hound duck hunting or goose, i think you would have a harder time getting it to go out in the water and retrieve wounded waterfowl than the getting the lab to put a few coons up a tree. no they don't hunt or tree like a trail hound they wasn't bred to.
