Don't ya hate it when you lose an old friend?

Michael,
I am looking at the same knife you are on e-bay. The handle is what doubles the cost. If I were you I would get one of the Moore knives. I have a Schrade old-timer single blade locking pocket knife that I inherited from my Dad. It is carbon steel and I have a fixed blade schrade I use for elk hunting and it has a razor edge and it is not a stainless blade.

I saw a Moore knife with a yellow handle at a gunshow here last week and it was $38 and it was only a two-bladed knife. The stockman is a three-bladed knife and for only $34 I think it is excellent quality at a fair price.

It is very likely that I'm taking a very narrow view of the schrade knives because I've only seen the ones you see at ACE, True Value and Walmart. Nothing but mass market marvels. I dropped the dime on E-bay for the #3301. If I truly like it I can always move up to the Buffalo handled knife and those sheath knives sure draw my eye.

Michael, I think you will really like the knife. I have a mooremaker muskrat. I really like this knife. I think you will like the steel. I am with you, and prefer the hard carbon. I even like the tarnish it gets with age. I found the web site after I made that first post. They used to have the 3301 in bone handle, but I didn't see it. I have a friend who sells them, and I will check with him if you are interested.

Sorry Cross J I made the deal on E-bay already. Mooremaker does still make the 3301 pattern knife in several handle materials, I almost jumped for the bone but since all the knives are the same except for the handle material I could not justify the extra money for a little flash. They do make a stag handle knife that I would have gone for if the price wasn't $100.00 more than the Delrin model. Stag does have a practical advntage in a gripping surface, but $100 is a lot of money for a small advantage.

But, I am interested in their sheath knives. If the folder lives up to my expectations I just might have you talk to your buddy, better yet if you could get me some prices and PM me it would be interesting.

Thank you for the offer.

I don't know if you're still looking or not, however I found the same type of knife for a friend that had finally sharpened too much blade away. He bought his original knife before he went to vietnam. I found that the same one could still be found on ebay by searching under the name "old timer 340t" there are several carbon blade models on there now anyway. hope that helps.

I got the Moore Maker Stockman #3301 in the mail today. So far I'm fairly impressed. The knife has a nice solid feel without being chunky, the mechanisms work well, meaning, the hinges are smooth and tight, but not so tight that you worry about losing your fingernail when openning it. It came with a fair factory edge, sharp but not up to my standards. So, out came the stone and oil. The edges are not where I want them to be yet, but from the way the steel is working up I believe this knife will hold a great edge.

A few day ago I dropped by a knife store and handled every stockman they had, two caught my eye:

Case XX - These knives were close to what I wanted but the blades were rather thin, NOT carbon steel, and the stocks were thin. The edge was rolled over right from the factory, not a good sign. Over all the knife did not feel like it would hold up as a worknig knife.

Buck - These were solid and felt nice in the hand, but to be honest, I've had a few Bucks, they were stolen out of my open top Jeep. I do not fully trust Buck steel, the out of the two knives that were stolen, one was great, a nearly perfect combination of hardness and the ability to sharpen. I was so impressed I got another as a back up. This knife was a piece of over hard junk.

The other knives I looked at were true customs. Priced to the point of being absolutely stupid. They even had a damascus Schrade that was priced at over $600. Like I said, "stupid money".

Out of all the knives I looked at I'd still walk away with the Moore Maker as my choice. If your in the market for a good solid real everyday mans knife give Moore Maker a hard look ...@... Mooermaker.com

A side note : For those that see commercialism at every turn. Predator Masters has absolutely no connection to Moore Maker Knives and neither do I. This was a true evaluation from my point of view.

Michael J.
I have really enjoyed this thread. Lots of good give and take and info on something most of us love ...our knives.
I'm very grateful that folks will share their opinions about various gear , gizmos and gadgets on this board. I think there is a good policy in place where the administrators draw the line that won't let folks more or less run a free add for their products, but still allow us to hear about gear that we might want to take a look at.
Those that worry about "commercialism' may not have gained an understanding of what this board seems to be about.........at least from my corner of the corn lot. We ask questions, share opinions, seek knowledge to improve our skills afield and for the most part love hunting and the outdoor life in general. Some times a fire fight breaks out and those that try to use the board for the wrong reasons are mercifully taken out with a head shot.

You said ...... " This was a true evaluation from my point of view . That is how I look at what most folks say about gear they talk about. I read an opinion and take it as just that , an opinion. Hope my comments are take in the same light ,just one fellas view from where he's standing. This is a great board and certainly has provided me with lots of great intel on a wide range of subjects.
Think I'll take a look at that Moore Maker Stockman #3301 you talked about. How long have you owned stock in the company? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif LOL
