DOT Scope ?

Has anyone tried hunting with one of these or are they just no good at long ranges. I have a spare one just collecting dust and wonder if I could use it on a new 223 Thompson Contender Handgun. Otherwise I will buy a regualr scope.

Have one on my .223 T/C 14" BB and works pretty good. Are you thinking of bringing it to the PM Hunt? More than a few coyotes have made it to the happy hunting grounds with mine.

I have 2 rifle scopes on my specialty handguns. My .17 Mach IV XP-100 has a 4-12X Burris compact with a plex reticle and Stoney Point target turret, and my new Savage Striker .243 WSSM has a 4.5-14X Leupold with Varmint Hunter reticle/target turret. The .17 is just fine with it, and once i get some loads developed for the WSSM, i'll find out about the eye relief on it-- i'm sure it'll be just fine-- i used to have a factory 7BR XP, and it had a 4-12X Bushnell Banner that worked fine. What kind of dot is in this scope-- a single dot in the center of the x-hair, or a multiple dot setup?

It's a red dot scope. Just one single lighted DOT. No power or anything. I only brought it up because the scope is sitting collecting dust and if I don't use it, I'll need to buy a better one. I am curious how far out I could shoot with it? The contender is a 223 so my thought is I will need a better scope. Any opinions?

it really just depends on what you wanna do with the scope, if you wanna shoot tight groups at 100 yards fogettaboutit. If you wanna shoot running jack rabbits then heck yeah. Red dots are majic on running targets, shoot with both eyes open and you are on target so fast you can't believe it.

I use a bushnell trophy red dot on my muzzleloader, it has 4 interchangable reticles and works great. I am going to buy another for my 22lr, for shooting running jacks LOL. I mainly use the 3 moa dot, and have shot 3/4 to .5" groups at 50 yards.

It would come to the pm hunt with me. The 223 will be mostly for coyote hunting. This could often be long shooting, thats why I wonder if I should just invest in a better scope and let this collect dust a little more.

I have the Bushnell Trophy on my AR. For long range shooting I personaly wouldn't recommend it. Those dots cover 3-5 inches at 100 yards. Get out past that and you have a hard time on a coyote. Night has also been another challenge. Red dot on a red colored back ground isn't the easiest thing also. Last Sunday I called in 3 coyotes on the first stand. The first shot was 200 yards on a broad side coyote. I shot and missed. If I would have had a regular scope there would have been 2 dead coyotes at least on that stand. It is some thing that you need to spend some time with.
