DP Duke Traps

I've heard a lot of good things about these traps(DP's) so added a few to the trap line this year. One problem, I can't seem to catch anything in them and my bait is stolen? Picked all of them up yesterday and they seem extra hard to trip. Can someone tell me what they are using with good results and why are they hard to trip? Thanks in advance for your help with this problem.

Try to file the latch like you would on a regular trap so it fires crisp. I have also found with the DP's that if I put just a small amount of bait in the trap below the trigger and spread some more bait around the trap that it works better. I use Mastersons Truckload coon bait in my dog proof traps and spread the pellets around the trap to get them eating and when the easy stuff is gone they will reach all the way down in the Duke DP to get more. Nothing against the Duke's DP trap but I like the Coon Cuffs better. The Coon Cuffs can be used like a pocket set if you want where the DP's have the spring on the outside. They both work well but I just can't pack a lot of bait into the DP's and have them work as well as they do with less bait in them. Try different things and see what works for you and let us know your results.

Mice rase havic with DP baiting. I bait as explained above and set a golf ball on top of the trap. One can also place a ball of tin foil on top. I set them on a hair trigger after fileing the triggers so they have little resistance.
I slip a piece of 7/32" automotive vacuum hose over the trigger an inch long for a more attractive pull for coon.
If the ball is moved and bait gone around here it is most likely a possum. They seem to have a gentle touch.

Great tip Roy!! I am going to try that. This is what I love about this site is all the collective knowledge that is available and the people who are willing to help and share. You never stop learning.

I know how your feeling I've had acouple in my line the last 2 years still no luck, Hopefully no with the snow melting here in PA I will get a coon in one of them. I've also heard about putting marshmallows behind the trigger so they had to really work at getting it out and trip the trigger.

Caught my first coon in one this year. I used dry dog food filled just over the trigger with some fish oil mix pour over the dog food after the 3rd day. It seemed to take a while for it to work. Does anyone dip the DP's? Mine have a little rust on them...not that it matters for coon I guess.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and tried all of them. A few days later I had a big bo sitting there waiting for me. This forum is super for the info thats shared here.

Congrats,I caught my first in a DP yesterday and was impressed with them!! I put pillow batting on and around trigger then filled with smoked oysters! Big old boar after 4 nights!

I am a coon hater/trapper...Turkey hunter. I dont care for these nest robbing boogers... So here's how I use my DP's.
Get you a bag of regular size marshmellows. Push the mellow onto the trigger and set the trap. I usually set the latch about halfway so to give it a faster trigger. For the bait, I make my own. Get you some fish food/pellets from Tractor Supply. A couple larger jars of marshmellow creme and a couple packs of grape koolaide.. Also I use a carp bait flavoring called vanilla butternut, you could probably use vanilla extract with good results. I mix roughly a gallon and a half of pellets with the marshmellow creme and koolaide. And I'll give it a good dose of the flavoring to give out a good scent... Its real sticky and smells really good.. (about forgot to tell you to ad this concoction to your DP trap after you have put the marshmellow on the trigger and set it. Fill it up with this and let a little spill to the ground) Placement of your traps help in catching too. I usually set along creeks and small streams and natural funnels just like you where hunting for deer... In about a week and a half I've caught 14 coons and 9 of them have been on the same 20 acre tract. Good Luck and let me know how many you catch with it..

I use the large marshmallows most of the time. I stab one through the trigger before I set it and then place another one in the top. Sometimes I also pour pancake syrup over the top marshmallow and let it run down in side. The syrup scent seems to attract better when it gets cold. I tried several types of fish but never had real good luck with them.

I always had the same problem. First year I used em caught nothing. Second year i used em I did alright. Third year an I finally got it down. All I use is a marshmallow and fish oil. Take a large marshmallow an place it under the trigger an then take some fish oil an put it inside the traps, along with trails of fish oil coming to the trap from different directions with some on a tree limb above the trap just to help the smell carry. I'm also having trouble with bait bandits eating the mallow every once in a while. So next year I'm goin to get small rocks an just paint them white an try that.

This is what I did. I used a small part of a marshmallow balled up and stabbed on the trigger so it would pivot freely then capped the opening with a whole marshmallow. I tore up pieces and littered the ground around the trap with them as well as honey bun parts. Seemed to work good for the little bit of time I had mine out.

Another thing that I figured out was that a long flat blade screw driver makes setting the Duke DP's a snap. Place the flat tip behind the coil spring and pry the wire spring back toward the trap body. Takes almost no effort to set them this way.
