DPMS Hand Guard Removal

Gents,

I recently purchased a DPMS in their .204 Ruger. I'm loving the rifle, but I'm having trouble with disassembling the floating hand guard. I'd like to tear it down for a proper coating of Krylon.

I have purchased the DPMS multi tool and a strap wrench thinking that I'd be GTG.
It looks like the Hand Guard is a two piece unit with the longer portion threaded onto the barrel nut. Is this correct? If it is, I'm unable to budge it with the strap wrench. My second issue is with the removal of the gas block. It is held into place by two set screws on the bottom of the block. I removed these screws and the gas tube pin and I'm unable to move it as well.

So,
1. How do I remove the Hand Guard?
2. How do I remove the Gas block and gas tube?

I reached the limits of my search [beeep] on AR15. So if you can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

First thing's first...

You are correct about the free float tube... but, it should have been a lot easier to start to un-thread it. Mine is on hand tight! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Second... if you have a small plastic hammer you can tap the gas block forward to get it to budge. You shouldn't have to hit it hard. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have the same gun, My float tube took a little convincing to come off, but it did come right off. The gas block was a little more work, I used a plastic hammer and first tapped it left the right to get it to loosen up, then just tapped it off the barrel. They will come off....
Hope this helps....
Chris

Thanks. I would have thought that it would have been much easier to remove. I was able to get some advice off of AR15.com and the poster suggested that DPMS probably applied Loctite to the threads on the Hand Guard and possibly the gas block. So I will give it a try by applying some heat to the rifle to see if I can break the bond.

It does, Thank you. So did you just use the strap wrench in a counter clockwise turn? By the looks of the gap between the hand guard and the gas block, It seems that there is very little clearance. Was it necessary to remove the gas block to get the hand guard off?

I would remove the gas block first... then deal with the free float tube. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
