DPMS LR-308

One of these seemed to follow me home today. It has a 24 inch fluted barrel and as expected, a lousey trigger. I haven't got to shoot it yet, but was wondering if anybody that has one might give me a little heads up. Any problems? Hows the accuracy? Maybe a smaller mag, like a 5 rounder. Any and all, good and bad, information will be appreciated. I've been wanting a 308 in an AR platform for a while and it was too good of a deal to pass on. Thanks pyscodog

Have you considered a new trigger group? What's the pull wt on the trigger?

Hijack: Broken Arrow is a cool little place. I played the Nat'l Coed Softball tourney there in the 90's. Good times!

I just got it Saturday and yes, a new trigger is being considered. I kinda want to shoot it a little just to see what the accuracy potential is before spending more money. I would have bought a Rock River, but the $$ are a whole lot more. Also the DPMS was there and I had the cash in hand. I guess that was an impuse buy! Headed to the range this morning, will know more in a few hours.

i have the remington version, complete w/ a dpms magazine, 20" barrel, a poor 2-stage trigger, and delicate camo finish.

the rifle is very accurate, however - so yours should be as well.

enjoy your new stick!

Just returned from the range. The factory trigger S U C K S!!! Accuracy was fair with 168 Match Kings. Blaiming most of it on the lousy trigger. Groups were averaging around an inch. All in all, for the first time out, not to bad. What I did notice was a bit of smoke fouling in front of the gas block. Is this normal? My AR-15 didn't do that.

I've had a DPMS LR 308 for 2 years now.I replaced the trigger with a RR national match which is pretty good, however if I had to do over again I would get AR Gold or a Timney.I have the fouling as well but has not been a issue.Accuracy has been excellent. With Berger 155 vld hunting as well as 168 vld hunting, 3 shot groups (from edge to edge)is 1/4 inch sometimes less at 100 yards.150 grain hot core groups around 7/8". You can get a 4 round magazine at 44mag.com.I handload only, so if you want any info on what has worked and not worked just send me a pm. I hope you enjoy your rifle.

Its been a week since I bought the LR-308. Today was the second time out to the range. Today I tried some 168 Nosler Comp. and Varget. Groups are very bad, maybe 1 1/2 inch spred. I took my trigger out and polished the hammer and trigger and installed a used set of springs that had the old fix-all bend in them, not much better. I guess I'll pull the trigger out and send it to Bill Springfield. I searched for a few triggers, but everything under $200. was sold out. I was hoping I would find the "Magic" load right off the git-go but I guess I'll just have to start from scratch. OOOH Well!

pyscodog,

My factory triggers were pretty bad too - you're on the right track looking for a good replacement.

I've been shooting a DPMS .308 AP4 and a DPMS .300 Rem SAUM for over 3 years and about a year respectively. I replaced both triggers with a super smooth single stage Accuracy Speaks trigger for about $205 per rifle. Both break very cleanly at 3 lbs. I certainly recommend them.

As far as a load/bullet. I had some grouping truobles with factory stuff. I finally landed on a load for each rifle using Lapua Scenar 155gr and 167gr bullets, Vihtavouri powders, and Federal 210M primers. I now have both rifles shooting consistent sub-minute groups. I've also found a Sierra hunting bullet for stuff bigger than coyotes that groups well too. It took some extra bench time, but I eventually got it right.

Good shooting,

Mark Healy

Thanks guys. Sent the trigger to Bill Springfield last week, if that don't work, I'll be looking at aftermarket. Lots of places are sold out, must be alot of DPMS's out there. LOL
