dpms panther sportical 223

I've only shot mine at 50 yards so far, but it seems to be pretty happy with 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips with 26.5 grains of Varget pushing them.

Always thought the depression on the side of the bolt was for forward assist.
If anything more is needed you got other problems and the only thing you will accomplish useing the designated forward assist is haveing to stand on the chargeing handle to try and remove a cartridge.

Do you hand load? If so, I have good luck in all my AR's in .223 with 60 grain Hornady V-max bullets and Benchmark powder. All of my loads are at or slightly above maximum but of course you'll start a bit lower and watch for pressure signs.

If you're looking for a factory round, try picking up a box of Hornady 55 grain v-max rounds to run through your gun. Generally, these are a great go-to round for accuracy and for hunting. I'm just speaking on my own experience here with multiple AR's (some DPMS).
