What grain of bullet and factory ammo type have some of you guys found to be the most accurate out of a 1:9 twist barrel. I have a DPMS 24" bull .223, and it seems to like the 45 gr. JHP out of the Winny White box. What are your experiences??

Thanks,
B

1:9 is a little fast for 45 grainers. It should shoot 55-68 grainers real well. My RRA has a 1:9 and it does real well with 69hp's but anything heavier starts opening up.

My 16" bull 1/9 DPMS seems to like either Federal 50gr. HPs or Black Hills 52gr Match HPs the best. I tried about five different factory brands and bullet configurations from 45grs to 62grs. My Colt AR 1/9 seems to prefer the Winchester 55gr HPs just as a comparison.

I'm still waiting for the weather to break so I can test some reloads with different bullet weights.

I've got some reloads for my RRA midlength 1-9 twist that are pushing a Hornady 60gr HP into nice, tiny clusters at 100 yards. Now to see how they work on yotes.

I tried some of the Black Hills 55 gr. softpoints and my gun didn't seem to like them much, but they were the blue box of reloads (I think)! Could this be the problem with those? Are the 52 gr. Match HP's you guys speak of, remanufactured? Thanks for all of the help!

All the BLack Hills ammunition is remanufatured. Usually their stuff is exceptional.

Edit: I stand corrected, I've never seen the new Black Hills ammunition.

I have a 1-9 twist 20" ar and it shoots the blue box black hills 52 gr better than I can shoot.Michael,I think black hills makes a red box that isn't remanufactured ammo.I've been wrong before though.Take care, daveyboy

Everyone says that the 1:9 is too fast for the 45g's., but the best accuracy out of my Savage so far is with 40g v-max and 26.5 of H335. I get great results form 50g v-max with 26g Varget, but stiull not as good as the 40's.

All I shoot from Black Hills is the Re-Man blue box stuff. No need to spend the extra money for new stuff in my opinion. Blue box shoots as well as the Red box in my experience.

1 in 9 twist AR's are real finicky about what they like to shoot. This is why you see me speak about 1 in 8 twist barrels for the AR all the time. Generally, 52's, 55's, and some like 60's. I have one that really likes 40gr loads but I don't consider them a good bullet weight for predators.

Thanks for all of the input guys! I guess i'll just have to do a little more testing to see if I can get a heavier grain bullet group as well as those 45 grainers do!
