Duck call Question

I started out with an Echo coco bola double reed and learned from that call . Once he gets pretty good with that call it will be very easy for him to figure out what his calling style is like. Duck calls IMO are like shotguns , it's whatever works for you.

I have to add the Illusion Mini-Mag. I've used mine for about 20 years, hunting just about every day of the season. It's a very small double reed call that has great sound to it. The reeds are very close to the mouthpiece and so I believe it blows the spit right out of it. It really does not take a lot of air but can handle a lot at the same time. I've blown in competition and tend to throw a lot of air into a call, but the Mini-Mag never locks up on me.

Even more important than the call is knowing when to blow it and how. Reading the ducks is vitally important. A good "Meat Caller" tends to master reading the ducks even more so than producing superior calling.

You sound like a good Dad. Spend as much time with your son in the marsh as you can! I did the same and now I have a 29 year old son who is an exceptional caller and a great hunting partner.

I'm going to offer some advice that is a little different. Calling ducks takes some acquired skill. If you don't quite know what you're doing it's best that you don't call at all and let the decoys do their job.

I used to be a waterfowl hunting guide in Northern California before I moved to Alaska in 1974 and I know of what I speak. A bad caller will run off more ducks that he ever calls and will usually screw up the hunting for anyone around him. On the other had a good caller will turn ducks that otherwise never give his spread a second look.

A number of years ago Phil Robertson made a video called The Art of Commanding Ducks. It's the most comprehensive instructional video I've ever seen. It's out of print but you may find a copy on Ebay.

Over the years I've heard some great calls in the $150 range but that's a lot of money to spend especially when you can spend a whole lot less on an original model Duck Commander call that sounds as good.

I don't think that's the video pk1 was talking about, I have heard all that video is is a promotion for the calls with some tips thrown in...he was talking about the original video,(The Art of Commanding Ducks) which is a very good learning tool..no nonsense and to the point.

I use a Duck Commander Triple Threat. It brought several limits this season. Triple reed easiest to learn on. Get him a cheap single reed if he can blow that all the others will be easy for him. Good luck, waterfowling is wicked contagious.
