Duck Hunting in the Rain?

I was planning on going duck / Goose hunting today after work. Starting around 2-3. But Now I hear they are calling for rain. So whats the story with duck hunting in the rain? Will they be moving? Any tips? Or call it quits for today?

I'd go if it wasn't heavy. Had a lousy duck morning in clear weather and strong northwestern wind today, had a pretty good day in moderate northeastern and light rain about a week ago. There was a lot more flying then. But of course there could be a million different reasons for that!

But a little rain didn't stop them though.

Yeah wasnt sure. Just wondering what people thought. The forcast is "Rain" So go figure. It is raining now. Not hard but not light. The place I will be hunting has a couple of lakes with a lot of reeds. And some cover. (Lackawanna state park) for those of us here in nepa. Ive got a brand spanking new waterproof jacket, and waders so I shouldnt get too wet....

Rain means duck hunting. A windy rainy day makes for some great shooting. I said "shooting" not hitting! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Get out there Man,kill some birds!I'll take rain and wind over a clear sky anytime. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The only time I didn't like rain while waterfowling was before my eye surgury. Taking raindrops on a contact lens or needing windshield wipers on the glasses was a pain, but the shooting was always the best in the nastynasty! Get out and bust a few!

As a Wet Side duck hunter I know a little about hunting ducks in the rain. My brother-in-law from WI likens hunting here with me to "hunting ducks in the shower with the cold water turned on". I have found that as long as the rain drops are small enough so they don't splash when they hit the water the ducks will keep flying. As soon as the heavy rain passes they will be flying.

Well I went out there. The honkers were moving good. But not so many ducks. My buddy and I got a coot.. Our first duck.. Pretty cool. Cant wait to get back out there. Oh and after the sun set We saw what looked like a couple wood ducks but it was too dark to shoot...

Just wonderin' how the "duck" tasted?
At least you were out braving nasty weather. Next time you'll get your first duck. I was just "funnin' ya"

Yeah it was a blast... We were in the middle of setting up the decoys and two mallards flew really low over head and my gun was on shore. But atleast we got something and my buddy's dog got her first real retrive.

What part of waterfowl don't people get?

If it drizzling I will go. But, if its coming down cats and dogs then I will stay home pillow wrestling!

The more miserable the weather the better for ducks! Some of my best hunts have been in weather you would be half nuts to go out in. Yes coots are interesting birds. I shoot a few every year. We got real brave at camp this year and tried to cook a few coots with some wood ducks. Dont know if I picked the wrong coot or what but it tasted like sun dried liver!

Here was our first mornings kill this season for 3 of us. Bunch of coots there!

My first duck was a coot also.I thought it was a black duck.Think that's bad?My first ruffed grouse was a hen pheasant. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

lol, Ive run out of shells blasting coots, and have no "ducks". On a morning hunt and have to paddle back to the truck for more shells to continue. Lol.
