Dug up bait

Checked five of my traps tonight to find that my bait has been dug up and no trap set. I placed my bait hole on the north side of my trap thinking north winds. Well for 3 days we have had south. Is this just the way it goes? Or are you guys changed your bait hole with the wind? Or is anyone digging two holes one north and one south of the trap?
 
Huh? It doesn't matter what position you put your hole in, as long as the trap is set correctly you will catch something. I am assuming you are talking about a dirthole.

How big is the hole you dug? Did you dig it straight down or at an angle?
 
I have been diggin my holes to look like a gopher hole as deep as I can dig them, prolly 8-10 inches on the north side of the trap with the hole angled up at the trap. So if you were standing on the trap you'd be looking down in it. Seem logical?
 
Yeah I understand. You putting anything there as a backing? A rock or old skull or something helps to keep the animal working the front side of the dirthole. How far back is the trap from the hole, and is it offset to one side?
 
I've got the trap 6-8 inches from the hole. I guess I really dont have anything backing it up though. I should have thought about that a little more. My traps are along a drainage ditch, I could have used the grass as a backing. I put the 2-4 feel from the grass in some soybean stubble with the hole being on the north side of the trap to take advantage of north winds. But maybe I got this set up wrong.
 
I agree. I think that smart fox or coyote often dig from the back side of the hole and end up tripping the trap in the process.
