duke leg hold traps

Im kinda looking for some traps for in the near future. I've sorta messed with it for a year or so, with not much luck. I think I want to try to get into it again. All ive got is a few old victor coil springs, and a few longsprings.
There is a catalog with duke traps in it for what seems to be pretty cheap. I think they are $55.00 for a dozen double coilspring 1 1/2's The 1 3/4 are a little more expensive but are they worth it? I'm also trying to get into catching coyotes, but the traps are very expensive. Would number 3's be good for coyotes, or can I go a little smaller? Maybe I can get good at snaring them? I was just wondering what you guys thought of duke traps.
 
Dukes are definetly OK, but they are a little cheaper trap, if you want a little better quality maybe try another brand. Sounds like you will target yotes and other critters, I would reccommend that you get 1 and 3/4, that will hold yotes and also is small enough for other critters. If exclusively for yotes I'd opt for the #3's!!
 
i posted this on another site about the same thing your asking here is why i won't buy victors. at minnesota trapline it would cost 180.05 to buy 12 victor #3 offset coilsping traps and buy base plates 4 coil kit and lamination strips now to do the same with the same size duke is 149.50 both will hold coyotes or cats just as good as the other will so why spend the extra money on victors when you could use it for something else now these are for new traps if i can get a good deal on used traps i don't care what brand they are

Have you considered Bridgers? They are a great quality trap but are a little less expensive than the Victors. Not by a lot though. You mentioned that you are just getting into trapping, so maybe you could run fewer traps until your line starts to produce and then parlay that money into more traps. Just an idea. I like the Bridger 1.65's for a coon trap and the 3' for coyotes. Maybe buy 1/2 dozen of each, and when you sell some fur buy another 1/2 dozen.

Duke traps are good to look at but if you want to get a good start Bridger, Victors or Minn Traps are the way to go If you get Dukes they come a box marked made in Korea

I have caught hundreds of animals in Duke traps without a problem. Some of my traps are the new style but most are over 10 yrs old. I get sick of hearing how Duke traps are cheap. If they can blow up through ice and snow here in maine and hold onto a yotes foot, its a great trap to me.

i am with john on this one. i have no trouble holding cats/yotes in duke 1.75 coils. most trapping losses are not the traps fault. most are operator error.

I've used dukes for many years now the old style took some adjusting to suit me but what trap doesn't.Many improvements have been made to dukes in the past couple of years. they are listening to trappers on what they'd like to see and the improvements are being done...charles
 
Mauser, were are Bridgers made???

As for duke traps, the 1 3/4 will hold an eastern yote fine, so any western yote should be held fine also. I got back into trapping a couple of years ago and had to retool so I went with Dukes and haven't lost a single animal because of the trap. The 1 1/2 will also hold a yote when new, I have seen to many negative replies on other sites about using the Bridger 1.65 for yotes, only use them for coon and fox.

As you ask more questions you will find out everyone has a trap company that they like and none of the other traps will stand up to the them according to who ever it is talking about that trap. I personally have victor's, bridgers, dukes and blake and lambs in my arsenal of traps.

If you are going to try snaring for yotes you want a loop 10 to 12 inches and the bottom of the loop 12 inches off the ground. It would be best to find someone in your area to help you get started with snaring. Jeff E
