E.L.K. Power Howler - It can't be that difficult.

I read Lunchbox's post this morning about the Power Howler and went down and bought one as I have always wanted one.
However, I can't get a decent sound to come out of it. It sounds more like an elk bugle when I use it. I have horn howlers, tube howlers, and diaphragm howlers and can work all those fine. But I can't get this Power Howler figured out. Any advice would be appreciated.

Don't try to work it like a reed call, because it is totally different. Use your lips on the plastic in front of the band, not on the band itself. The more air you blow, the higher pitch you'll get. It has to be one of the easiest calls to use once you get the hang of it.

I will second that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

When the power howler is up to your mouth make sure that the horn part is pointing up, Put your bottom lip on the band on the side furthest from you. Push up agianst the band and blow, as you blow take pressure off slowly till you get a high pitched sound and the less pressure the less high pitch it will be.

Hope this helps, the first guy to use it has it upside down from how most use it. To bad JD doesnt have a demo on how to use it but these guys were all i could find. If you ever get to meet JD then you will be able to see what these howlers can do. But till then this is all I could find http://www.tripleoddbuck.com/elkinchcalls.html

lol thats funny i didnt think my post would prop you guys to getting one its pretty cool though.

question: how often should you change out the bands on the howler?

ive had one for years and i love it !! its hard to learn how to use but well worth it when you finally do .....
good luck ...

its alot like a blind man in an orgy .. you just gotta feal your way through it ...

haha well put. with the bands you need to change them out as often as needed if you hardly use it you can have the same one on for months but when we practice we might go threw one in two weeks. If the band is not tight anymore then switch it out. The bands that come with it suck so you need to get some latex gloves and start cutting the fingers off and making your own. just experiment.

It's more of a huffing than a blowing call, and angle up at a 45 degree or slightly more to get the true effect. Short huffs for bark with your lower lip turned inward, making sure you have the latex inside your mouth, but not touching the latex.
Longer sustained ones, with more air volume toward the end to higher the pitch.
