East River South Dakota hunters?

I've had a mt. lion tag the last two years, but never gotten out there. Hoping to get out there by late-February. I see it's only at 19 harvested, so it should still be open by then.

Kotton,

Good old rabbit in distress will work, but try the busier and higher pitched bird sounds, like a woodpecker in distress. Stay on stand a bit longer too. 30-45 minutes. Do you have an e-call or just hand calls? You can make the woodpecker sound on the call by fluttering your tongue as you blow.

Hey Mark,

I just have hand calls. I tried an older Fox Pro a couple times but I didn't like the sound quality. Maybe the newer ones are better??? I was thinking of trying to go down by Burke sometime and give it a try. What kind of calls do you use?

Kotton,

The newer Foxpro's are definately better than the older ones. I used to have an old Foxpro 532B. I don't own a Foxpro right now, but have heard them and the sound quality is much better. I personally don't own a Foxpro e-call, but alot of guys have good luck with them. I currently have a Minaska Ultimate One and a Wildlife Tech MA-21 along with a bunch of hand calls. I like the e-calls because of the variety of calls available to you.

What kind of hand calls do you have? Pretty much any of them will work for bobcats. The higher pitched the better in my opinion. You could give a Verminator Tweety or Syco Tweety a try. They are good calls and you can get real crazy high pitched on them.

I have tried a couple stands a few times last year but havent had a chance this year. I was able to trap two of them this year though. This new snow should help but i am going to the hills for a lion this weekend. Looking at the weather there might not be any snow when i get back.
Like SDCAller said busier higher pitched sounds are the way to go. And keep calling; i dont have personal expierence but i keep reading that they get sidetracked easy and lose interest if there isnt consant action(sounds). Thats one advantage of the electronic call- it doesnt get winded LOL.
verminator has good calls, some of the higher pitched ones i have used have the small metal reed thats enclosed in a 223 shell. Not saying other like calls wont work but i have one that sounds good.

Good luck on getting a lion! I am going out in a couple of weeks to try to get a lion. We are going to hunt around Sturgis, how about you?

Your location says MN, but you are hunting in SD or live here? Harding county?

Anyone going out this weekend? I'm hoping to get out on Sunday, weather permitting. Let me know how Saturday went and what was successful if you go. Thanks.

Got out twice.

Both days out I had them howling what seemed to be all around me, but never saw a single coyote. Any suggestions on what I should have done?

Missed one from 400 yards that I walked into. Saw 2 more running a thousand yards out between stands.

I went out earlier in the week and never saw a coyote in 3 stands, then my buddy and I went out this morning for a couple hours. First stand nothing, then about 25 minutes into the second stand we finally had one come in. My buddy shot him at a hundred yards. He howled, then some fawn in distress, then we were howling at the same time and that is when he came in. The wind was blowing hard enough by then I can't believe he heard the call.

I can't offer you much advise, as I am fairly inexperianced. I have killed a few but most where targets of opportunity. Like feeding cows, checking fence and what not. I have only ever sat down and intentionally called in two coyotes, out of maybe eight stands or so. I need somebody to take me out so I can have a different perspective. Maybe I don't do something right?

I went out Saturday and called in 2 (of the 4 that were together) on the first stand. Lost one in some tall grass (saw it at 20 yards but couldn't find it in my scope) and got busted. Ended up missing two running shots at about 200 yards.

I have come to the conclusion that I need to have a shotgun with me.
