Looking for someone from Eastern MA. who would be interested in giving me a few pointers on coyote hunting. I have been out shed hunting and I am seeing lots of coyote sign and 3 deer skeletons and I think it's time these coyotes get some hunting pressure! I know nothing about calling them in or what guys use for rifles or loads. Any help would be gladly accepted.

I believe shotguns with no larger than #2 shot or a rifle no larger than 22 rimfire. The rifle is only allowed in certain counties. What town are you in, Im from Holbrook.
I too am new to the sport having taken 4 coyotes with a predator call while deer hunting(3 with the bow) but only going specifically for them a few time with no luck. Good Luck.

Well good luck since shotgun only with shot smaller than BB or 17HMR or 22LR. NO lites although you can hunt till midnight. I have called a few times at nite and had what I believed was a fox and coyotes but I was not 100% comfortable in the ID so I held off. Also I am afraid ofeven bringing a flash lite to track if needed in case a warden splits hairs so I refrain from nite calling unless there is a full moon, clear skies and snow. WIshing for alot, I know and we might see gas for 1.75 a gallon first.

I believe the coyotes are doing a job on the deer in Eastern MA especially the fawns since my fawn sightings are way down the last few years. I am skeptical about skeletons being kills this time of the year since deer have been pursued since mid October and alot of deer are lost to poor shots and or unknown hits. I do know they take down adult deer in Bristol and Plymouth Counties as I have seen many far from roads and long after seasons close.

As for tips alot more people are trying than you would think and meerly educating yotes with distress calls. I have had most of my luck with vocals and canine. Dont even try for fox as it seems after November they go underground wich I believe is a result of the yotes picking off the young and stupid and the adults / smarter foxes stay in the thick stuff yotes can not penetrate. At least down here in Bristol County.

Good luck to ya and if you are in one of the unfortunate counties like Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable etc go look for a used TC Contender pre 1998 and registered in Ma pre 98 also and you can use a handgun or pistol of any caliber during the day. I have one in 223 and I am still getting aquainted with it but i finally took it out for a quick hunt this am. The yotes moved on since early December so no takers. Seems like it was a bedding area and now the track seems more transitional.

Thanks for the info gdc23 and Ceider, I am not surprized that in MA. you can hunt them at night but not with light, goes hand in hand with some other laws we have to deal with! The skeletons I have found I would assume 2 were fawns or no more than 1.5 years old judgeing by thier bone size and the other a lost deer or a car, it was 75 yards from the road. I would use a 22LR scoped but do they let themselves get called in to 50-70 yards as I would not think that a 22LR would do the job outside of that. What kind of calls do you guy's use? Do you use any scents? I am going to pick up what I need this week and hit the woods so is there anything you can think of that I might want to pick up? I live in Plymouth County and will be hunting here. Thanks alot for the info and good luck!

I would go with 12 guage lead or hevy shot in #2 or B if you can find it. Try a old friend that hunted geese back in the 80s for lead 2s. Otherwise you might have to order them from your local shop. I stay away from 22 LR with the thick cover and if you get a running shot in cover you will likely deflect the projectile.

I dont use scents just a scent proof container for my clothes and some gear. Then I use scent shield before I walk in. After that Good face mask and gloves to cover your skin. Think of it as hunting as deer hunting and turkey all wrapped up into a super hero game animal with super senses no one else has. Keep still and do not move your head, only your eyes.

I use a electronic caller as well as open, closed and bellow style calls. My ultimate weapon is on the drawing board a life size yote decoy for next year. I figure I will take a nice pelt and mount it with eye bolts and straps in the belly to carry on my back and when using vocals I would bring him also and apply some yote urine. could even hollow out the mold to put my caller up in side so the sound was emitted from the decoy.

Thanks again Ceider, I will start my mission of coyote hunting as soon as I get what I need. This should be good for some real laughs until I get the hang of it! Well, now it's off to the Cabela"s catalog and spend some $$$ I will have to see about getting the #2 in lead also. Thanks again you have gave me a place to start. Good luck with the coyote hunting!

Good luck and let me know how you do. How did the shed hunting go for you so far. Out here in Bristol County near Rhode Island I was seeing full racked bucks as of last week so I have held off looking and calling areas that hold two bucks I hunted this year but did not get a good chance, although I did get two bucks just not the one I really wanted. Keep in touch, its nice to see some Mass people around.
