Rotaxpower,

Easiest way is to use a barrel inletting tool. But if you don't have acess to one, find a dowel a little bigger than your barrel and wrap some 150 grit sandpaper around it. Sand till your hand bleeds and quit. It does take quite awhile to get the channel opened up and you may want to try a few different diameter dowels to taper the barrel channel so it's the same as your barrel contour. Start small and work you way up so you don't take out too much. This is purely aesthetic, but you really don't need a huge gap around your barrel, just enough to slide a dollar bill to the receiver. I have done this on a sporter rifle with good sucess.

Use cloth backed sandpaper with 1/8" of the grit stripped from each edge, and see-saw it down the barrel channel using the barrel as a guide. You may need to loosen the reciever to start in the tight places. If you have a fine finish on the barrel, shiny blueing for instance, you can use wax paper between the barrel and the sand paper to keep from marring it, but on most finishes the cloth backing is enough protection.

This method will give you a barrel channel gap that follows the contour of your barrel perfectly, as long as you keep the sides of the paper vertical as you go.

Some Remington 700 ADL plastic stocks have two small bumps that just touch the barrel at the muzzle end of the stock. They are there to keep the barrel centered in the channel, but they usually, but not always, touch the barrel. You may be able to sand those two bumps off and the barrel may no longer touch the stock.

I use two dollar bills together to slide under the barrel see if there is clearance all the way back to the recoil lug. If not, start sanding.

Plastic ADL stocks really suck, in my opinion. Other than adjusting the trigger, that is the first thing I try to upgrade when I buy a 700.

You have heard the easy ways.
The best way is to pillar bed it with lots of clearance.(On the flimsy plastic ADL stocks, that means at least 1/8" clearance.) The best way also means doing it twice so bedding shrinkage is minimized. The final bedding should be less than .010" thick.
