Electronic Calling Prohibitions in NY State

Hello all, great site, have been lurking for about a year and have learned alot. I have a question, I have been considering a foxpro and was wondering which game animals you are barred from hunting with an electronic call. I checked the NYDEC site and all I can seem to find is that you are not allowed to use an electronic call for turkeys in season. Are deer/waterfowl ok?? what happens if you are in the woods hunting varmints during turkey season, are there prohibitions similar to no centerfires in the woods in deer season in shotgun counties??

Any help appreciated and, thanks again for this great brain-trust.

Hi Robert, welcome to the boards. Sorry I can't help you on this one as I am not from NY but am sure you will get some answers.

Richard,

hello, I am from NY and you can use electronic calls for predators
http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/wildlife/guide/smallgame.html#Furbearer

If you are hunting predators during Turkey season which is from Oct20th to November 2nd. and are using an electronic call is should be ok as long as you don't bag a turkey with your electronic caller in hand! Are you concerned because you want to use electronic turkey calls for predators? I would contact the DEC through that website, they are very helpful and usually respond within a few days. Happy hunting.

Scott, Thanks for the reply, and Richard is one of the better names I've been called /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Actually, I just wasn't really aware of any restrictions on electronic calls and noticed one with turkeys. I really was most interested in preditors but was wondering whether electronic calls can be broadly used or are only allowed with varmints/furbearers like night hunting. I actually wasn't considering the turkey aspect but I have heard that preditors do respond to turkey calls all the time and it is a good question. I couldn't find anything in seaqrch and thought some of you afficiendos might know.

The only two bobcts I've ever seen in my life were calling in while turkey hunting in the northern Catskills. The first I bagged ( during the fall )and the second ( during the spring )I tried to take pictures of with a little 35mm pocket camera. He was too far to see in that little camera but he tuned right in on the auto-forward sound of the film......Anyway, I think turkey calls work great for any of the predators, especially coyotes and bobcats.

Robert,
I live and hunt predators in NY! The only critters you can use an elec. caller for in NY state are furbearers with the exception of crows. I haven't purchased many elec. sounds of turkeys in distress, but have purchased a tape and chip, and they sound nothing like a turkey in distress. You should try a diaphram call to produce those sounds. Plus a diaphram in your mouth would help when a predator is close but no shot can be placed.
I don't know where to post a sample of an elec. turkey sound I have, so you could hear it. It doesn't sound realistic.
