electronic ear muffs ?

I have the peltor ones that fit over your cap. They will shut off even if you snap your finger really loud. I can hear guys talking down range and you can hear someone wisper from about 30' or more.

great post with good info

I just bought a S&W 460 for deer hunting...and ear muffs are a must...2 shots without muffs and I thought my ears were bleedin

now I have a few choices to look at...

For hearing protection they are first class. You can hear them shut down when you slam the truck door.
For sound amplification I'd give them a 6 out of 10. I have a pretty severe hearing loss, and I can hear a lot of stuff with the muffs on that I can't hear with them off.
For directional sensitivity I'd give them an 8 or 9 out of 10. They are way better than I ever dreamed any device of this type could ever be.
The link I posted is from Midway, but I got mine from Natchez for about $70 plus shipping.

I got a set of the $250 Walker Quad muffs first. They had a little more sensitivity, but they had a constant background static that drove me nuts really quick. I sent them back the next day.

They also make the Peltors in a behind-the-head version for those of us that wear a real hat. The ones I have work just fine over the standard baseball cap.

I bought a set of the walker power quad muffs and they worked great for the 1st 9 months then 1 side went out completely and the other side pops and crackles. they only had a 6 month warranty. so needlless to say, I am not a big fan of walkers.

I have had 2 sets of peltor tactical 6. Had to send them both in for repair. They worked alright. I gave one set away, and lost the other pair. No big loss, they were falling apart. To be fair, I used them a lot. I now have a set of pro ears predator gold and they are good. For my taste, they are 100 percent better than the peltors. Costs more, but they are made in the u.s.a., and just hands down top of the line. I have used muzzle brakes for ten years, and I love the less recoil, shot sight recovery time increase. They are warm in the summer. But in the winter, it just adds to your warm weather gear. I hate having my ears freeze!

The Howard Leights are good. They are very slim and work good.

I have a pair of HLs that are not electronic and the are great for pistol shooting, but I can't get my head down on a rifle or shotgun.

I bought a pair of the Walker Quads nearly three years ago and hunt between 125 and 200 days per year. The quads have performed flawlessly.

As stated, when batteries start getting low, some static; have had them pick up some noise when sitting against a wire fence, but move a couple of feet away and it goes away.

Since it is quite warm down here in the summer, I often wear them off my ears until a shot presnets itself and them pull them down. These are regular over-the-head band but I generally wear band behind the head and have had no problems sliding the ear cups over ears in that position.

The foam caps over the mics are just about gone on mine due to many miles through the mesquite brush; need to check w/Walker and get a new set as the wind noise is worse without the foam covers.

The only fault I can find is that the on/off switches need a bit heavier detent as I often find mine turned on when I pull out of my pack. I'm amazed at battery life, especially since I do not know how long they have been on when this occurs.

Regards,
hm

I just got a set of the Walker quads from Cabela's (free thanks to lots of points

). So far for the last 10 days they have worked perfectly. The only draw backs is that without them you think your're far from any roads but you'll still hear cars going down a highway almost a mile away. And second is calling at just dark chipmunks running through the leaves behind you will scare the !#@%! out of you. The hand held howler dosen't bother my ears at all now.

I was out calling today and yes you are right they really pick up alot of traffic noise from over a mile away. I also never noticed before i used them how much noise the birds make around my stand. I'm on my second season with mine and they are still going strong..
I know one more thing if they did ever break down or get run over by accident i would get another pr. in a heart beat..
Another nice thing about them is i can place the E-caller aways from where i'm sitting and i can still hear it play and know that i'm getting a good reception with the remote..

My Howard Leights started to develop a little static in the left ear, wouldnt be an issue at the range but became a litte annoying after multiple hunting sets. I called HL and they said they had never heard that complaint, but they were happy to send me out a brand new pair for free, and I got to keep the old ones for the range.

2 thumbs up for their customer service!

I tried a pair of the Howard Leights at the range today. they are nice. the owner stated he had had them for about a year w/o any problems.
He said he had had a pair of the walker's but they went bad in less than a year.
I am going to order a pair of the Leights to replace my walkers that are kaput.

A little update on the Peltors:

I used them for 3 consecutive days last week on a ND duck hunting trip. They did their job just fine, but after wearing them for several hours in colder weather I had condensation build up inside the cups and cause static and sound distortion.
I opened them up and let them dry out and they went back to normal.
I had a few hundred rounds fired off close to me over the 3 days and they shut down perfectly every time.

I haven't had a single problem with mine, but that's great to know. I like it when people back up their products.

I did a search to check out the other products that you guys mentioned and either i missed something or most of you don't know what walker game ears are. Walker game ears are designed for hearing enhancement/hearing protection. I did'nt read into the hearing protection part of each product talked about but looked for the data on hearing enhancement..
The Walkers will amplify the sound 9 times louder at 50 db. The peltors claim 18 db for enhancement.

I dont have a clue what the HL's numbers are but I can hear alot better with them at max vol than I can without them. Actually I rarely wear them at max volume because its too much enhancement for me, I try to set them at about my normal hearing level. They are alot better than I expected for $60.
Too bad they are made in China, but I'd bet they all are.

I've been using my Walker Quad's for 5, maybe 6 seasons now, and as was mentioned, I wish they wouldn't turn on/off so easy because I too have found them to be on, when they weren't suppose to be. Battery life has been very good though. I still struggle with direction of sound. I won't shoot/rifle hunt without them now, although it took time getting used to carrying and wearing them.
