Elk Calls

Looking to see what calls you guys are using and like for elk. I figure with as much calling as I do for coyotes I should really start using calls more for elk.

Bugles, cow calls, anything you have success with.

Hopefully Cmiddleton will chime in since he has about one of every call ever made.lol

I've got a cow call made from tjones on this site, as well as have used my tnyotehntr open reed call a time or two as well.

Favorite elk calls are diaphrams though. Best one I've found for cow sounds is the primos mellow yellow. Bugles I'll use either the red primos tripple reed or blue Wayne Carlton diaphram for making raspier and groany bugles. If I'm looking to sound smaller (which is typical if you actually want the bulls to come in) I'll use the white primos diaphram.

I like the Wayne Carlton Fight n cow call, it's a reed call. For a bugle the Elk Inc. Power Bugle is my favorite. There easier calls to start with than diaphrams. The diaphrams definitely have there place, they sound amazing and are hands free, just a little harder to master.

ELK Power Bugle and woods wise hyper hot open reed cow call. All I have ever needed, they are cheaper calls and work well. Forget all the hoochie mamma, type calls they are for people who can't call and are so overused even i can tell them apart in the woods. On the flip side any call is better thaqn no call at all.

I really have never liked diaphrams. I can whistle for close quarters, and all the diaphrams I have eventually fall apart. I have the same buggle and cow call for over 12 years now.

Thanks for the input guys. Not that it makes me any more successful, but I do like taking the time to really practice and work on my calling so I have preferred the open reeds. I'll have to try a few of my coyote calls to see which ones make some decent cow sounds.

Woods wise hyper hot, Carltons Fightin cow call(2), and my bugle is an Abe and Son. Have been using this setup for about 15 years or so, and called in alot of bulls.

lots of the open reed customs make great elk calls.
