A buddy and I are looking at taking a guided elk hunt. State doesn't matter. Will do bow, muzzleloader, or rifle. We can both ride horse, and don't need a deluxe resort setup. What we want is a very good chance at a good bull. Any recommendendations on good outfitters?

What is your goal? Are you looking at a wilderness hunt? Or just great opportunity? There are many outfitters who do not need to use horses and typically they can be cheaper. A truck is cheap than a horse... I have a few in mind. for a first time elk hunt that is affordable with a great guy, I have a rec for you, but realize it will be a migration route hunt in the lower sage brush country mainly with trucks being used to get into position and a short stalk. If you are looking for big mountains pine trees climbing up and down I also have a great person. they are both locals I have worked with and know for a fact they will do everything they can to get your elk. Let me know which you prefer and I will get you info.

There is a trade off to hunting CO. Easy to get tags and lots of animals, but you will not see tons of huge bulls. There always is a good chance to find one near 300, but the majority are all smaller 5 points... Again lots of opportunity

Elks, we have both been on several elk hunts. I have mainly hunted public ground on a migration route. When you have to schedule and travel, this is tough. It is hit or miss. We don't need a wilderness hunt, but would like an opportunity at a 300 class or close to it. If we had our wish, it would probably be with a bow in order to catch the bugling season. Thanks in advance.

With that in mind... I would suggest looking up John Halandras at H&H Outfitting. He also is one of the best meat cutters around. All our meat goes to him. His webpage is www.handhoutfitting.com He loves the early archery hunts and has some great early season property. Archery tags are draw only where he is so it might take a year or two to draw. Or you could buy a land owner tag.

Overall great people. hard workers and love to hunt. A few years back John had a sheep, and a goat tag and still went like 11 for 12 with his archery hunters. They do really well. Just make sure you let em know Rob Winn referred you, I might get a discount next time they cut an animal up for me...

Never mind on drawing. Tags are private land only tags and can be bought over counter...
