Eotech and hunting at night

I've been thinking about getting better optics for my AR. I've been hearing a lot of good things about Eotech holo type sights, and was wondering if I ever get into the night hunting thing how it would work against the red filter on a spot light. Anyone here have experience with this?

We had a hunter this year with an Eotech. It works pretty good for day hunting and under 100 yards. But I dont like them for night hunting. They dont give you the magnification to help give you a positive I.D. Plus I do shoot out past 100 yards every so often. So in my opinion, get you a good scope. Jeff

Jeff is spot on. The reticle should be visible even with the red filter. But the draw backs of no magnification which aids in the identification of an animal at night could be a draw back.

Also if you plan on using it in other states. I know Texas will never do this, but they have been considering legislation that bans lit recticles etc. Colorado already has similar bans in place. I do not know what exactly it is, but it could be included or not. Thelimited night hunting I do I really like my 50mm objective with heavier crosshairs. I know it will never push the envelope of whats legal and not.

Glad you guys brought this up. I am a tactical shooting instructor at work, and own a 16" AR 15 carbine W EOTEC 552 for work. I was wondering if it would work for a varmint gun also. Am new at this varmint/preditor stuff and only have used my 17 HMR so far. I might have to try it, as it may save me the bucks for awhile of buying another upper reciever and scope.

Rusty, I have mine mounted on my shotgun. Just havent had the opportunity to try it out yet at night or durring the day. I think it would be the cats meow for a shotgun at night as long as you had the shotgun in hand and the sight turned on. If you had to pick it up , turn on the sight and then aim and shoot it might be a liitle much to handle. Then again, you could always turn it on and rest it in the cradle for the satnd . That way it is already on if you need it. Just don't forget to turn it on.

I've heard some guys say the red lens on their spotlights washes out the red dot on scopes at night? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
I just purchased an Aimpoint 9000SC for my scattergun.I'll let you know how it works at night with my spotlight.I think the holosights have a heavier recticle however compared to my 4MOA dot.

I know it doesn't wash out anything on Leupold or Nightforce scopes. Those are the only two illuminated scopes I've looked through at a red light.

Take it easy,

Rusty

They are probably the two best too Rusty. I think the EOTEC will do well like said here maybe out to 150, but not the light transmission and magnification of a quality scope, especially in diminished light.

My opinion

Alot of the cheaper red dot and reflex scope arent bright enough and do get washed out with the red lighs. The EOtech is very very bright. I believe it has something like 20 brightness setting.

I own two Bushnel Holosights.

There is no problem not finding the sight against a red light at night. It contrasts just fine.

Three 44s

Here is my night rig. Here in MI we are limited to scatterguns with less than buckshot or rimfire.
Due to using short range guns I use a small l.e.d. light.
I love the EO Tech at night. Quick in cover and plenty bright.

OK Here is mine. Gonna hafta try it one day. Sounds like it will be a nice unexpected addition to my varmint hunting equipment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif [image]

Finger,
I bought my AR for other purposes as well, but it has made the transition just fine. Right now it just has a cheap 4X20 on it, but I sure like the looks of the Eotech. I don't hunt much at night, mainly because I do most of my hunting alone. I'm begining to get my feet wet in the night stuff, but wasn't sure which way to go on optics. I know I need to upgrade. With the Eotech being so versatile, I could use it on most any other gun I own if it didn't work out.
Thanks for all of your input guys!
