Ethical responsibility (.17 hmr, et al)

YaDA YaDA YaDA, Big freaking deal one thing about the hummer is it has taken the heat off the .17 Rem guys. shoot what the hell trips your trigger I believe in humane kills but if it don't drop in it's tracks track it and if you can't find it OH WELL! Get over it. You ain't going to starve!A whole lot of so called hunters are going to jump down your throat and say it is'nt ethical to lose a coyote lest you track it for a week or two . Its a coyote the same critter that drags deer down and eats it from the A$$ first before it has died! I enjoy hunting and reading about hunting, not the in your face if you don't do it my way your not ethical or worthy of being a hunter mentality give it a freaking rest!!!!!!!!!!!

Folks:

Been enjoying the conversation back and forth. My only comment on the whole matter is I hope y'all make it to bed safe and sound tonight before someone has a stroke poundin' on the key board. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have posted some items regarding this on the serious side, based on personal experience and some in jest. I will post another in a serious vein.

I don't think anyone here wants to be "unethical" and I certainly don't think they would admit it if they were.

I think that by the person just asking about the rounds effectiveness and where is the best location to aim for proves he or she is ethical and trying to be so by asking the questions in the first place.

There are plenty of people that are limited by law to rimfire and shotgun only, does that make them unethical by law?

I know that me persoanlly, when I started Archery hunting years ago, I had to become a better hunter due to the range restrictions. I also started seeing more game due to these changes. I now hunt all the time as if I were archery hunting which gives me more oppurtunities and better shots.

I don't know anything about the person that originally posted the questions, but from my point of view, I think it is better that they ask than to experiment to find out on their own. Isn't that what we are all here for is to learn from others, and to help and assist others?

The original people who roamed this great land, the indians, used only longbows, spears and knives, and took every game animal, including bison, antelope, deer, coyotes, etc. They had far more respect for the land and its creatures than most of us, were they unethical? I read somewhere that for some tribes, in order to pass into manhood, a young indian had to be able to stalk a deer and touch it. That is skill, how many of us can do that?

I think that everyone gets to a point and self defines what the limits are they have to stay within when hunting with a particular weapon. The fact that he or she is asking the questions convinces me anyways that they are doing just that.

It seems as though when different rounds become available, someone makes a decision that it is best for xyz and if it isn't used, than those that don't are frowned upon. If the 30-06 was banned, would everyone that uses one today quit hunting or look for a replacement rifle and just maybe have to become a little more conscious about shot placement and maximum range.

I think we are all here for the same reason. To learn what we can from those who have done what we want to, and to assist those who want to do what we have done. Let's keep that in mind, and also that we all want to enjoy the time spent outdoors.

I hope everyone takes this the way it is intended. No hard feelings on my part at all, and I hope it doesn't offend anyone, that certainly isn't the intent.

Lets all enjoy this board for the wealth of knowledge and assistance it provides us all.

Have a great evening and enjoy this weekend outdoors and good luck to all hunting this weekend.

I for one am glad that the HMR arrived Us .17 Rem guy aren't getting as much grief about the little gun any more. I say use what you want being ethical is up to you. If somebody wounds and don't recover a lot of Coyotes in TX it really don't bother me here in Wy. And I ain't going to condem them let your concionce be your guide. Now that dosen't mean that I think you Texans are bad shooters or that poor shooters ought to go to TX /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I'm just saying that the indivigual ought to judge him or her self. I live and work on the mule deer's winter range and the deer kill by coyotes every winter is un real but I guess they gotta eat also.If I wound one I will track it and do what I can to recover it , does that mean hrs on his trail I don't think so, will I lay down and bawl /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif when I have given up and swear off hunting , no. I will get back on stand and call some more. The way a lot of you Arm chair hunters jump down someones throat when they post a Q or make a statement is really Sad If they ask for advice give them some good advice or stay the hell off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Peon, relax and sit back down. I saw nothing offensive in your post to Critr, either. And your appology, just in case, certainly clarified your intentions.

The point you were trying to make was a valid one. I NEVER go big game hunting on opening day for that very reason. I just know some "one day a year hunter" will think I'm a 10-point buck with a blaze orange vest on. Geeze, I'm combing bird-shot out of my hair on opening day of dove season, as it is!

JC:

I looked back through all the posts and only saw two folks who posted from Texas. Since I posted just after you, did my post trip your trigger in some way or are you just not fond of Texans in general? Just curious - BCB /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Very well put DOD...Especialy the part about if someone asks about the best way to do something then they do know about ethics and care enough to try and do the best job they can. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

ChileRojo,

Hang You? I didn't see a lot of trees in your area. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Mostly just bush type things with thorns and needles. I think you are having way too much fun with that rifle.
