Ever blow up a rifle........

I thought thread locker was required on mauser actions, what keeps the barrel from loosening up when fired? No nut or lug? If a short chambered barrel was installed and hand reamed to correct headspace, thread locker would need to be used?? Wondering out loud because you said barrel came off easy.

We had to use a vice and action wrench. But it wasn't stuck that hard.

No, thread locker as we know the product today wasn't around or in use in pre WWI /II and later Mausers ....

The barrels Shoulder (via compression to the action) being a RH twist it actually prevents a loosening after the barrel is torqued (65 to 75 Ft Lbs), Then finish reamed for the chamber headspace, usually the last few thousands after torqueing the barrel in.
Factory Rem's use a lug, but they, as done by the factory unless altered don't lock to the action. again the shoulder press against the lug pressing against the action. No need for loc-tite.
(now some old smith did use a copper thread sealant to snug up the class fit between the barrel and action, but it wasn't to lock the threads usually. Mostly to correct the barrel tendons threads being slightly undersized / sloppy in fit.)
Carbon usually finds it way into the threads and over the years will fill in between the two threads. I recall on one M1 Garand barrel that I pulled in 2004, installed in 1942 used a 8' cheater pipe /action wrench and took every thing I had and when gave way sounded like the action shattered. It was a bugger.
