Explosive .223 projectiles & loads

I have had very explosive results with 40g Vmax and Nosler BT's using ww748 powder loaded about 1gr less than max. That is my standard prairie dog load and I have used it on groundhogs and coyote also. It meters well and is clean. I am using a slo twist BBL 1:14. Never tried it in the faster twist guns.

Huh???

What he said... "Huh"???

.

50gr Hornady SX has always been pretty explosive for me and that's out of a 222, bump it up a couple hundred FPS and it should be really messy.

Have heard of some guys with the superfast .17's poofing bullets, but never in a .223.

Rob,
Sorry for the curiosity [sp], but why are you wanting to do so much damage to the rabbits?
Are you not eating them?

When I shoot rabbits, I try to do as little damage as possible, to not waste the meat potential.
But, then again, I've never used a .223 on rabbits either. Hahahhaha
Only .22LR & shotguns.

Quote:If you do load with the thinner jacketed varieties do so with lower than max charge in mind. ...In some cases, he's right...Pushing hot loads with 50gr SBKs out of a 1/7 twist barrel will vaporize quite a few rounds before they get to a 100 yard target...Hornady "50gr Super Explosive" bullets have to be kept at 3300 fps or below, or they tend to do the same..

The only bullets I have ever vaporized were Hornady SX out of a 1 in 9 barrel. It could have been a bad batch, but I never tried any others after that experience. Those bullets shot well in a 1 in 14 .22-250, but came apart in the .223.
