wingmasters are built better than express's seem to balance better also. been shooting a wingmaster for 25 years amd many thousands of rounds with no failures. great gun!!!!
the fake, parkerized, matte finish on the Express sucks! Couldn't keep it from rusting. Ended up bead blasting mine, epoxy primering and painting it. If you're gonna use it when/where it's wet, get the wingmaster. Same design, different finish.
Paint does not stick to Wingmasters near as good as paint sticks to the Express. Plus when you paint the Express it looks better than it did before you painted it. The Wingmaster won't look better after it has been painted.
Your not looking at apples to apples their both remington pump shotguns but one is an economy type gun and the other was not. For a beat around gun to paint the express will work fine. But the wing master is smoother and a nice shotgun and I agree with the others better made. If I remember corectly watch the chamber lenght I believe some of the wing masters were in 2 3/4" only and would not chamber 3" shells.
I have personally owned three Express models over the years and ALL THREE had functioning problems. Three strikes and the Express is OUT! I have also had friends with Express models that have struggled with them working properly. They’ll rust in a heartbeat and dang near wear a callus on your hand from that nasty rough finish on them. Conversely, I have never had a single issue with a Wingmaster and have two stacked in the safe right now. One of those Wingmasters is worn silver from being packed in rough country for so many years. I couldn’t tell you how much game that old gun has taken, a lot. I’ve also ran herd over a whole bunch of Wingmaster Police editions that have been great duty guns. The Express just doesn’t cut it for me, ya'll can have my share.
I like my new express (coulndt afford a wingmaster) hasent rusted and i like the finish, had one double feed while shooting trap (but i think that was my fault) all in all i really like it would still like to get a wingmaster though (traded one off a while ago and it still pains me to this day)
i have had problems w/ NEWER express models. i have never had problems w/ wingmasters or older (like 7 years and beyond) express. the wingmaster is alot more finely finshed. i own a remington 1100 right now and never had a prblem w/ it
Never had any problems with my 3.5" 870 12 ga. express. And it's going to be getting painted shortly so the ugly will get covered up. It's my beat around gun. My Browning Gold is my pretty gun.
I just bought my son a new 12guage express. The newer finish is definately rougher than the older express. The forearm rubbed the side of the receiver horribly. I sanded the inside of it for a long time and it has cured that problem.
Real pain in the butt trying to sand between the bar/rail and the forearm. But it's done.
He brought it teal hunting this morning, and the first two shots ever out of that shotgun brought down two Blue Winged Teal. He was happy!
It does pain me to have to "work" on a new anything. But, unfortunately, that's what you have to deal with when you go cheap.
I would have bought him a "nicer" shotgun, but he hasn't learned to appreciate fine firearms yet.
I still think they are the best cheap shotgun available.
I have one of each. An Express Magnum Turkey that was bought about 12 or so years ago, and a Wingmaster I've had for 25 or 30 years. I use the Wingmaster as my upland bird gun and hunt Turkeys and Coyotes with the Express Magnum. I've not had any problems at all with either of the guns, although I did get some rust started inside the Express Magnum after sitting out a 3 inch gulley washer while Turkey hunting a few years ago. I managed to get inside and get everything cleaned up before there was any damage though.
I bought an 1187 Turkey gun to replace the 870 a few years ago. The 1187 didn't pattern as well as the 870, no matter what ammo I tried in it. I ended up selling the 1187 and still own the 870.
I have a 12 gauge wingmaster, and it is great! I just got it recently, and from what I've seen and held, the wingmaster is the way to go,IMO. And you can get a older, used wingmaster for about the same as a newer express.

Trade in value talks. Traded in a 20 Express new condition got just over half of new.
Traded in a 28 Wingmaster perfect condition after several years, got more than original purchase price.
Traded in 410 Wingmaster perfect condition got 3/4 original price. Should have kept it.
