I waiting for my second coat of minwax to dry. don't think I'm going to apply any more. I like the way it looks with only two coats. I'm sure it will be enough protection. Minwax recommends two coats and I read everyone puts on 5 to 6 plus coats and it makes it shine. I like the dull luster look. I'll wait a day or two for it to dry and try out the 55's and see if will group. I acraglassed the whole action years ago and floated the barrel. I know the stocks are prone to cracking but I would assume with the action bedded its not going to move around. I would assume the action being loose and moving around is the cause of most stocks cracking?
You may want to buff it off with 0000 steel wool, then another coat, dry, then steel wool, then another coat. The idea is to fill in all of the pores in the wood. With somewhere in the vicinity of say 7 to 12 coats, scratches will be easy to fix.
I put a third coat on it and wet sanded the finishing oil before letting it set in. I buffed it off with a rag and it's starting to shine a hair more than what I wanted it to. The wood looks 3D now. I'm done with the coats...three is enough for me. To each his own. I might rub it with steel wool to dull the luster.
This the smallest one I own, it is a Contender 223/16in.
With 45 gr Winchester's It is under 1.5 in at 100 yds.
I have a 6,8mm barrel for it. I would shoot deer with it.
It is a nice small rifle. I have the bipod on just for the picture.
All done. Three coats of minwax. The rifle basics trigger is 18 oz. I'll wait a few days for the finish to dry before load testing. Maybe it will help me tighten my groups jumping from a 7 to 9 power and it will be nice to have the two drop dots in the optic as well from aim points at longer distances. I'd rather have a fiberglass FL bedded lightweight tactical rifle but I'll give this one a try for now,
I just did some horse trading for a ram line stock. I'll camo and bed it when the stock arrives. I'll feel better taking off the factory stock to preserve it and have one I use and abuse.
my ruger ultra lite 243 cal weights 6lbs 9 oz. with the sling 4 rounds and 4x12 scope. this has a pencil barrel good for 3 shots in a row than spray and pray.very accurate for the 3 shots under 1 in at 100yds. a real pleasure to carry.
Have you looked at the Savage 116 lightweight? I picked two up at a gun show recently. I was impressed with the weight for sure... I do not remember what calibers they come in but you can check their website.
My stock showed today I traded a box call I got for free and $20. It looks and feels awesome! It weighs a approx 6oz. More than my factory stock. It has a nice thick rubber butt pad on it to cushion the recoil compaired to the factory stock so maybe I can keep a coyote in my optic through the recoil of the shot...probably not. The Palm swell and forend is definitely wider to my advantage. It fits my hands a lot better. It doesn't feel like a micro BB gun and my hands are like the jolly green Giants. I never cared for the looks of the cheap ram line stocks but this one is spectacular. I will have to order a new supply of acraglass since the stuff I have is 18 years old. It will cure but it takes a few weeks to do so. This way I can covert it back to the "stock" stock for originality in a matter of minutes. The guy I bought it from did a great job on the paint work. It came from the Vegas area so I would assume it was used for a calling rifle like I'm going to do when in AZ.
