Face to face with a coyote (pic)

My dog and I got out for a drive to scout the old hunting grounds and we could not keep ourselves from sitting underneath a Juniper tree and blowing on a call.

I had just called for a minute or two, when my dog looks over to the side and we see a coyote pup running right at us. I reached over to undo Luna's leash from her collar but fumbled with the darn thing in all the excitement and Luna figured she was not going to wait for me, so she took off after the coyote, leash and all.

Luna caught up to the coyote underneath a juniper tree and tried to figure out what to do with the coyote, since this was as close to a coyote as she has ever been. The coyote growled and lunged for her a few times but you could tell the coyote really was intimidated by the much larger Luna. Luna took a few bites at the coyote in self defense but was still unsure if she should try to play with it or tear into it.

After a brief fight between the two, I killed the coyote when Luna was well away from the coyote.

Luna is 14 months old and I imagine she will look forward to getting out again real soon.

Great story and awesome photo!

Sounds like Luna's going to be a seasoned veteran by the end of this winter. That photo is one for the scrap book!

Try a French swivel release. I use them on my hounds for a quick release, when they are tugging and pulling to get in it. They are the kind you just simply squeeze the sides and it opens right up. Sorta like the French Govt, you just put alittle pressure on them and they let go. They come in all sizes.

Bill Boatman's Dog Supply Catalog has them. They work great for quick release, but hold solid.

Sorry about the French gig! LOL but it is true.

catdog , great story ! I have had 3 Airedale's in the past , great coyote dog's ! I only wanted them to find the wounded coyotes , & not to just run them . Once they get on the trail , I could never call them off till they bayed up .That would give me time to get there and finish the job .I had same problem , chance encounter , or while calling , sometimes they wanted to get the coyote or cat before I could shoot .I soon learned , to keep them on the leash till the right time ,then release .Well , my first lesson was ,don't tie them to your belt,or sit on the rope ! You know the rest of that story . I never lost a wounded coyote or cat with the dogs .( I sure did before I used the dogs )If you can convince him to stay with you , till your ready to sick-um , don't use a coller , it gives the opposition something to grab .That can be pretty dam scarry ,or fatal . Those Airedales will hunt anything that walks , flies ,swims or crawls . Number 1 in my book !! If this is your first experience with airedale's for coyotes ,I prommise you will never have a better time doing it .Keep us posted on your progress . Good huntin---Tom

Catdog,

I dream of that kind of hunting.
How commom is it for a coyote to act like that?I understand the coyote wants that rabbit the 'dale has but do they hang around and are willing to fight often?

Pruson you're killing me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ...
