Then again, from the looks of some 700 Model barrels they might not be quite that advanced yet...we used to think they must have a retired alcoholic circus chimp with a bit brace doing it!!!!!

Any smith worth his salt can crown a barrel in a very few minutes, I've seen and had it done several times. My smith says it embarass's him to charge someone to crown their barrel.

You mentioned that your usual smith does it for free.. Why not take it there then?

Aguy at our club noticed the unusual marking on the crown of my 700P Remington. His first thoughts was a bad crown because when fired, it didn't leave a star pattern on the muzzle. After a few minutes trying to remove the unusual markings and them not coming off, I painted the crown and tested the rifle again and the marks were no longer present after firing. I then determined it was just a flaw in the finish as the rifle shoots very well. I was in the store that I purchased the rifle from and they have an in house gunsmith and for curiousity, as ked how much to crown a barrel? Their reply was $100.00. If I needed a crown, I would take it to my smith that will do it for free. OK?

I'm glad to hear it wound up shooting well.. Good thing you tested the rifle again and gave it a fair go before taking it to your smith and wasting time and effort.

they make a tool that takes a pilot shaft for the diameter barrel being crowned you put it in the barrel and turn it.brownell's sells the tool for about 50.00 it works very well

I did my last crown for about $2. I started with a metal chop saw and cut about 6 inches off the barrel on my sks, bought a cone shaped grinding stone for a drill and jammed it in there for a minute or so. The rifle went from 8moa to about 2.

Looking at the piece I cut off, it was pretty much a smoothbore. I'm guessing getting rid of that did more for the rifle than my work

After a day at the range with it I kind of wish I had done it right!
