Falconry

Has anyone ever worked with any falconry birds. I was just a little curious, how ever thing worked and how well you liked it. Also has anyone had any experience with letter carrying.

Years ago I went out with 2 brothers who were licensed to capture and train their own birds. There is no greater rush than to have a black dot in the sky suddenly become a large bird that lands on your arm with nothing but a thick leather glove for protection.
They took me along on both bird hunts (falcons) and rabbit hunts(hawks). Both with different dogs to work with/for the birds.
If you get the chance...jump on it with both feet. I am a lot older now but still count it as one of the greatest experiences ever.

My wife is a bird veterinarian and has clients that have Falcons and Hawks. They hit their prey so hard that they can hurt themselves if they hit wrong... anyway the one guy has some of the biggest of the Falcons, the Gyre Falcon. He told me to go online to his site where he has hunting videos.

That whole thing where they are so high they are a speck, then they point straight down flapping their wings under power. When they hit a pheasant they hit so hard that the bird seems to explode in a cloud of feathers and sometimes entrails as they often eviscerate the bird.

The big Falcons cost tens of thousands of dollars, so it's no joke when their birds get injured hunting, but it's sure a thrill to see it. Go online and look up Gyre Falcon hunting and you should be able to find some spectacular stoops.

I've wanted to hook up with this guy but he moved to Idaho.

I was a licensed falconer back in the late 60s and early 70s. Proper care and exercise for the bird requires more time than I could give it once I stared a family. I mostly had redtails, ran the rabbits with beagles. It didn't take long for the hawks to learn what the dogs were about, then I was pretty much just an observer till the rabbit was caught.
