Family + Coyotes = AWESOME!!!

What can I say, it was the day I'd been hoping to come for a little over a year now. The day when we could actually shoot a Coyote while my 3 yr old was with us and got to see it. Well today was the day. We had been trying all year, but as any of you who have a 2 or 3 yr old know, getting them to sit still in the house is like wrestling a possum, let alone getting them to sit still on a Coyote stand. Well today, thanks to the FX3 and a little Coyote Death Cry we finally made it happen and killed a nice little female, actually a really nice female. If it weren't for the fact that I forgot to bring a cooler I might have kept her for a mount.

Anyway, we were set up on the West side of a small ridge with the sun to our backs and the wind in our face, perfect. The FX3 was about 100yds SW of us down in the flats. After about 5 mins of nothing and 10 times of asking Emma to sit still and be quiet, my wife (Nancy) says she saw movement up on the opposite small ridge on the other side of the flat. About 2 minutes later I see two dogs running like crazy along the far ridge about 400 yds out. I thought they were coming to the call, wrong. I lost sight of them and then they popped back up where they came from. I put the scope on them and ended up counting 3 of them and they were just playing and having a good time. Every once in a while they would turn and look to see what was making all that racket on the other ridge but they weren't coming in. I told the wife " I got something for them" and I switched over to the Death Cry and not 2 seconds later a GIANT RED dog came charging out of the pack toward the caller, not long after here come another. The big dog really was no kidding red, really neat coloring. Anyway the big dog stopped at about 150yds once it saw the feather decoy and it wasn't there long, remember the sitting still thing??? Well it caught movement and bolted just as I got the crosshairs on it, but the trailer wasn't so lucky. While she was trying to figure out why the other was running away and also in a trance by the feathers, she took a much needed dirt nap with shot to the chest at 150 yds.

It was an awesome day and my daughter was really excited to finally get to hold a coyote and see if it was a girl or boy. Don't ask!!! We made a couple other stands, but between getting tired, having to go to the potty, wanting to pick flowers and throw rocks they ended up being pretty uneventful. We had a nice picnic and ended up driving up to a mountain tourist town for dinner, in full camo which got the wife some pretty wierd looks. It was definately the best coyote hunting day ever and one I've been waiting for, for a long time.

Here's some pics from the day.. Tim

You're a lucky guy, I hope my little girl takes to the outdoors as well as yours. She's only 11 months old, hopefully she will be sitting out with daddy pretty soon.

Great photos and story. Love to see kids out doing what we used to do. Hunting and family will keep kids on the right track.

That is a great story. I have a 2.5 yr old boy and have been wondering when I could get him to hold still long enough to get a coyote in. Good job and nice pics.
